Oldsmobile dealer gold and diamond ring
You come up with some pretty cool stuff. The "Barn Find" that I bought out, The guy that owned all of the stuff has one of these rings and another one that is a little different and made of stainless. He said the stainless one was special made for someone but I can't remember the story.
I have a number of Olds rings, both Salemen/Manager and Service. I too have one that is not gold. It is not "stainless" as such, it is a base metal that is used for rings and jewelry. It is, however, made by Jostens and looks virtually identical to the gold ones. I have not been able to find the origins of this non-gold version.

It don't have any stone in it. It had a spot machined into the top in the shape of the shield. A little Oldsmobile shield (like the size of a hat pin) was placed into the recessed area. I am very sure he said it was stainless. I plan to go see him before Christmas, maybe he will let me take a picture of it.
Who the heck is "WW"??? This may have belonged to Doctor Olds himself with the "W" initials/moniker
They should have made those with a small version of the OAI flapper top in place of the stone. Maybe even one with a small vacuum hose running up your hand/arm to activate the flapper door.

I almost bought one of those rings back a few years ago. Now I'm seeing it was overpriced at the time since it only had 1 of the diamonds. It was listed as an 80's Olds Saleman's ring. It also had initials engraved in the back WLW. So I'm wondering if that actually was the salesman's initials or the dealers intials.
Kurt - I didn't know there were Guild or Service rings? Is the type of stone what would differentiate it? You've got my curiosity going. Nice score on the ones you have BTW! I don't see these things come up for sale all that often
EDIT: Just a thought....would the number of Diamonds added to the ring be a reflection of the amount of sales??

Okay on to less depressing details:
The diamonds are for years that that the sales award level are met. First year you get a ring. Each successive year gets a diamond. When you get to ten, you get a new ring with a rocket in the black center and you start over adding diamond on the perimeter.
Sales manager rings are the same, except they have a red stone. Bear in mind that these are from about the mid-seventies and were pretty much the same until the end except for a change from the rocket logo to the newer logo. Also show is one from the mid-sixties. Also note there are women's rings! These are pics of rings I have.
Here are examples of the Service ring and the Guild ring. I do not have the Guild ring.
The older Service rings are by far the most striking. They were complimented by other items such as cufflinks and even knives. The newer ones were like the Salesmans rings, but had a green stone. Except the women's style that was made to resemble a older style.
Very cool information. Thanks for sharing! Maybe an oversight on my part, I never assumed there were women's sales rings back then. How's that for an embarrassing revelation?
You're right about the gold meltdown issue. When I gave the seller of the ring an OBO he basically said it was worth more as melted down gold and it would likely end up that way. Sad. If I'd known more about the historical association, I might have done the deal. At the time though it was $$$ I couldn't afford to play with.

Just underscores the need to preserve our history!
The problem for the Olds collector is that the price of gold has dramatically driven up the prices of the gold rings. Many times what they would bring without the gold value. I am certain that many have been melted for their gold value. The diamonds are not big and expensive enough to add a lot of value for themselves.

I would love to find one of the 11 year rings with the rocket in the middle in either Blue or Black.
oldsmobile ring
I was reading this thread about all the different oldsmobile rings and thought maybe someone could identify one of the rings i have. Any input would be appreciated not a ring collecter just found this one prob 10 years ago.

Always something new. Never seen that. Anything inside? Looks like it could be the original box. Any id there? Rocket emblem would appear to date it '60s-'70s.
Thanks Greg
oldsmobile ring
Ok inside the ring it says JENKIN PRECIL on the one side and 2 very faded initials D W. Only one i have ever seen, hopefully a oldsmobile ring collector can shed some light on this.
The ring is from J. Jenkins Sons, Co., Inc., and they are still in business.

I contacted them about this ring and confirmed it was from them.
"Pam" there was kind enough to look it up and in part, here is her answer
"We did do that style for a salesman out west.in the 80's. He was the salesman that serviced the Oldsmobile Recognition Purchasing Dept. The rings were probably given for Sales. The folder I found says that Precium is like a gold plated type ring. That may be a sample because I don't see any orders placed. I know we made a bid along with Jostens and another company. So maybe Jostens always won the bid. I really don't know and all the old people that worked here are sadly dead."
I really think that is a sample ring. Based on what she said, and I've never see anything from that company before, rings or otherwise.
I have this set of Olds pewter jewelry from 1967, featuring Oldsmobile's 70th anniversary. I have never seen a single piece of this elsewhere or anything else that has this 70th anniversary theme. I believe it is a sample set.

Kurt, Wow thanks for doing all the research on this ring, thats pretty interesting stuff. Knowing all that i dont know if that makes it worth more or less than a normal one. Makes sense though i am sure like anyone else they had to bid it out to keep everyone honest.
Thanks again!
Greg
