I've bought quite a few cars over the last year and I am building up a collection of fasteners. Nuts, bolts, washers, etc. The lower fender bolts in most cars are cut off due to rust but most everything else is salvaged, sorted and stored for future use.

Shipping is the real killer here. The padded envelopes cost 83 cents each and shipping will run between $1.00 and 2.00 for most items, unless they are bought in bulk.

Another issue is that even when the hardware is in really good condition it will require some attention. I recommend buyers run each piece through a wire wheel cleaning and a thread chaser before using.

Bumper bracket Bolt with one nut and one washer is $2.50

Body mount bolts $1.50 each

Some hardware is just not available since it is usually cut off during teardown; example being the lower fender bolts.

 

Since you mention it,I could use some original bolts and nuts to hold the OAI hood lock pin brackets to the core support. Can use some nice brackets also if you have them. I have one set of brackets but one has some damage.

Of course you'd ask for OAI hardware I may have some bolts the will work but I don't have any brackets. Sorry

 

GREAT idea
I saved many gallons of fasteners. For a while I had a washing machine [tumbler] for them. Worked great.

I don't have fastener needs right now, but...
things folks might need:

Head Boltstuds
Head bolts from under the rocker cover [no rust]
Intake manifold sets
special length bolts for thermostat housing.
exhaust bolts if not rusted
rocker arm/ oil pan 3/8 drive flanged bolts.
Timing cover- boltstuds, washer head bolts, etc.
SPACERS for the PS bracket.
Fender/ front end flanged bolts
Balancer 3/4" bolt and fat washer.

65-70 Big Car speedo drive pcs from LF wheel hub

Beasty double ended studs that secure the front bumper bracket to frame for 68-9 are always good to have.

etc etc etc

 

Do you have any quality bumper carriage bolts and nuts? I could use a few.

That sounds great, Tom. I'll take four sets, if you have enough to spare. BTW do you also have any of the nuts/bolts that connect the inner braces to the upper "tongue" on the '68 bumper? These guys?

any of the 68-70 phillips head screws/bolts and the corresponding nuts that hold the core support brace to bottom front of the front fender? These are the installed ones in the below pics. Note the loose versions are the ones a known Olds parts supplier sells.

This experiment showed the most requested hardware is bumper hardware.
It also forced me to rethink the way I store hardware. I will need a few more parts bins to organize the many nuts and bolts that are piling up in the shop.

I even took one car apart, tagging every nut and bolt on it so that I could use these pieces as a resource later, during builds or just in answering questions. I now need a parts bin just for these fasteners. I can't afford to mix them up with everything else.

 

tie the one Blessed Sample to the bin with wire. Used for an example only. Never to be removed for any reason.

The 5 gallon parts tumbler worked great. If I was to do it again I would use a cement mixer so that more and larger parts could be done. I have photos of some results. Somewhere.

 

Tom, Chris these are great ideas. I don't know how many times I've tossed fasteners into coffee cans thinking I'll remember where they came from. Some day when I'm too old and creaky to turn wrenches I'll have to sort the 101 coffee cans to find what I can identify and pass on to others.

The photos in #16 are right out of the parts tumbler. Almost a sandblasted finish. Some crud has to be wire wheeled out of threads and whatnot. Plastic like the timing tabs should not have been left in as long.
