Complete Olds Sport Steering Wheel $25

***********NOT MINE***********

http://garage-scene.com/garage-sale/

I don't know anything about this seller but ran across this page earlier today when searching for a wheel. I asked a question and received a reply a short time ago....problem is, I won another wheel on eBay earlier today! I don't think it's exactly correct for a 442 but I'm no expert...sure seems like a steal at $25 plus shipping.

Pictures are linked to many of the words in the ad....looks nice!

that is the smaller diameter steering wheel for what maybe Starfires and Omegas, still a great price though, just incorrect for a 72 and earlier A-body

No, I never heard of him before. He asked to be paid through PayPal so you might have some protection there.

Noticed that the ad said the wheel was sticky and he couldn't clean it. I had good luck with GM heat riser lube #88862627, followed by Formula 409 and dishwashing soap.

The '72 was short lived. I hope you made out OK. Did you save your wheels?

My friend sprayed a wheel with SEM landau after a thorough cleaning and said it worked out well.

Short lived indeed. But I learned valuable lessons about rust, had so much fun driving it and was able to sell for a profit.

Unfortunately the wheels had to go with it so I'll need to find a new set for the '69...

I received this wheel in the mail today. Was well described and packaged professionally...oh and as sticky as said it was! Time to get some cleaners or a cover...

I paid over 200 for my sticky wheel. It's the only part I regret buying, but who'd have thunk? Live and learn I guess.

So I am going to try to install the '70 sport wheel, replacing a '69 deluxe wheel. Heard that I need another horn contact pin to to do so. Can anyone confirm this and I'd like to hear any experiences of someone who has done it before. Hoping I can get this pin from someone here if I need it?

Thanks!

I have never done it but I bought this kit....hoping it works when I install the sport wheel on my '72 Supreme. Do you have a pin like this?

Yes you need a different collar and pin. The spring/collar/wire you have with the 69 deluxe wheel is too tall to fit the sport wheel. Also has a long wire which is not used in the sport wheel. Peters kit (below) is what you want.

That will work just fine Peter. It's actually a very easy install

Thanks - I will pick up this kit. Although I do not see a wire included...is it as simple as cutting the original wire to shorten it for the sport wheel?

Phew! $18 shipping for that measly kit...now I know why OPG is a last resort

I was under the impression that the sport wheel doesn't need a wire...not sure though.

Hey, that kit is on sale! lol To make matters worse, I got the wrong screws with my kit and they weren't able to find the correct ones. I had to go spend more money at the hardware store for the 6 screws that mount the wheel to the hub. They sent all panhead, not tapered for the countersink in the wheel.

I'm still working on the sticky thing before I install it...don't think I can drive with a sticky wheel. I'd probably be happy with a factory wheel but can't find a green one...mine was already switched to a wooden one. Looks OK but not my style.

That's why I went for a Grant. For less money I got a leather wheel brand new. I would love the sport wheel but have heard too many stories about bad used ones & the reprops are so much.

I tried Fusicks first and they had no kits in stock.

@79MKII - you may want to try to Superior Superskin leather wheel cover. WTony showed me how he sewed it together on the wheel and it gives you a sticky free stock looking wheel. Really nice.

Those covers look pretty nice on some wheels, not so great on others. I think they look great when they're installed properly. Here's a cover on a 4 spoke wheel even though it's not very close to an olds sport wheel:

Do you have a picture of the olds wheel with a cover?

I think that looks pretty good....you need to look closely at the color difference/threads around the spokes to know that its a cover. I ordered one from my local parts shop and am thinking about bringing it to a tailor or upholsterer to install/thread.

Yea, I think if it was professionally installed a cover would be a good option...not sure if I could make it look right myself. Probably wouldn't hurt to try...maybe it could be reinstalled if it didn't come out right.

Would SEM Landau Black vinyl spray be an option? A friend of mine sprayed it on his VW wheel and loves how it turned out.

The more I read about the cover and more specifically how much of a pain it is to install, I am wondering if the vinyl spray is a better choice?

Interesting...is that spray different than the vinyl and interior dye? I'm wondering if it really 'coats' it so it would block the sticky stuff...

Just an FYI for anyone undertaking a wheel changeover and is missing the pin to go up to the sport wheel contact. I got a pin for a storm door closer for like .70 at my local Ace Hardware that looked a lot like it would work. (My car had a Grant on it and had the wire not the pin) I pulled the wire out of the little plastic connector that holds the spring in and put the door closer pin in there instead. It was a little tight when I tried to put it in because the head was slightly large. I chucked the pin up in a drill and ran it against some sandpaper to reduce the size and it worked out perfect - works as good as a stock part IMO.

Excellent idea and super cheap trick.
This almost deserves a thread of its own!
