When we repaint the '73 Omega, my son wants to paint the roof black. I've looked at paint codes for '73 Olds and don't see black. If you ordered your '73 as a vinyl top delete painted black, does anyone know which paint code would have been used? Or do we just look for any color black? I was looking for Olds colors and there is a black from '71, code 19 Ebony black.

 

There was an Ebony Black in 1973 as well.

Just to avoid "truth decay", there's no such thing as a "vinyl top delete". The basic car came with a painted roof. You had to pay extra for the vinyl top option. It was "opt in", not "opt out".

 

Thanks Joe, I have seen a couple of cars with the vinyl top molding with no material, 'vinyl top delete' was a term I used as I didn't really know what to call it.

 

If they have the molding but no top, that usually means the worn top was pulled off during the repaint. Base cars did not get the molding if there was not a vinyl top.

He didn's ask for "proof." He asked for a code number for Oldsmobile Ebony Black 1973.

 

He said, "I've looked at paint codes for '73 Olds and don't see black."

So I inferred it to say, "Black wasn't available in 1973?"

 

I'm not sure where the OP looked, but this chip chart pretty clearly shows Ebony Black. They just didn't bother to include a black rectangle, but the paint code is on the lower right.

 

Yes, there are thousands of shades of white, but there is only one black, so there was no need to make a chip for it.

Not anymore, actually. Today there is black, metallic black, pearl black, etc, etc. I can't believe the proliferation of colors on new cars, most of which have nearly indiscernible differences from each other. Look at the paint chip charts for new cars these days. They run like 4-5 pages per year!

 

Yes, if you include metallic and pearl effects, that's true, but for just plain color, with no extra non-color effects added, there is only one black.

I just pulled up the (FIVE page!!!) 2014 paint chip chart for GM. There are two different versions of Carbon Flash with different paint codes (one for the Equinox/Terrain and one for other vehicles, but both look black). There's Phantom Metallic (for Caprice only). There's Black Diamond Pearl (for Cadillacs), and good ol' boring Black ("for most models"). They did include a chip for Black this time...

What I was actually referring to was the info at the bottom left of the paint chip chart that Joe provided. Where it mentioned two tone paint, if your roof was painted black, what was the paint code that would have been used.

Are the colors for 'Painted textured roof panel color moldings' the color of the vinyl tops? if so, what are the uticolor roof colors?

 

I'm kinda confused by what you're asking. The 4-digit code for that year's Ebony Black is 9300.

I'm gonna guess "Uticolor" is a Toronado vinyl top thing.

 

Going back to my original post, I was looking for what the black paint code might be for a two tone car from '73. I didn't know what to call it, and I messed up and referred to it as 'vinyl top delete'.

Since it's been noted that there was no such thing, my question now is what was those codes for the items listed on the bottom left of the paint chip sheet. Are they all for vinyl top colors, or are any of them for a two tone factory paint combination.

 

Those are two separate messages on the chart.

1. The paint codes for the moldings for cars equipped with vinyl tops (looks to be 7 colors to choose from).

2. A message in regards to reading the data plate or other document and knowing what color(s) the vehicle is. Hence, a Mayan Gold car with a Chamois Gold top would be 60 56. A monotone Chamois car would be 56 56.

 

The same paint code as would have been used for the rest of the car - 19 for black. If the car were, say, yellow with a black painted roof, the cowl tag would have had two paint codes, lower then upper, or 51 19 in that example.

Yes, they match the vinyl top color.

 

All this is true. The other great thing about black is that if the car is basic black not a "hybrid black" so not tinted or pearled or flaked, then it is very easy to match. The only color that is true with.

But as Joe pointed out, there are now many blacks. So this is only true with a true gloss black.
