Inner Fender Resto

I have my inner fenders out so MAW repaint.

I cleaned with Oven Cleaner, DAWN Dish soap, POR's Marine Clean, SEM Scuff and Clean with a gray scotchbrite pad then SEM Palstic and Leather Prep wiping in one direction then SEM Black Bumper Coater.

I'm sure I could have filled the scratches and nicks etc. but it came out nice.

Yes, that does look nice. Thank you for sharing the process and pictures of how they turned out.

Very nice. I know that is a lot of work to make the wells look like they have NOT been painted.

Looks great, SEM is the best product on the market for refinishing plastic.

I used a 3m / bondo product called restore black on mine, I had low hopes of it working as my fender wells were more white than black.

I cleaned them and removed any overspray and then applied the RB 3-4 times. they look very good not perfect but very good. I was so happy w the results I tried the RB on my black dash which already looked fine, after 1 apllication the dash looks so nice like new with a deep rich dark black. the stuff soaks into the wells and dash so after a couple hours there is no residue or black that comes off on your hands and the plastic looks and feels like its alloriginal

Nice job Newman, they look really nice. Now you get to wrestle with the rubber flaps and the staples.

I know, been scratching my head on that one. I might take them to an upholstery shop they must have heavy duty industrial staplers.

What you do is remove the old staples by cutting and pulling out. Insert new staples in the exact same holes and bend over. It is tedious and time consuming but looks like factory when done.

I just did my shield and staples and it wasn't bad at all. Like Nilsson said, remove the old and put in the new. Most staples are spread slightly wider than the holes, so I put the ends in pliers and a slight tightening will make the 2 ends parallel. I pushed one staple through a middle pair of holes after I set the shield on and lined it up. If the staple is supported behind with a piece of wood, you can press on the rubber shield to pop the staple ends through. With a pair of needle nose, I pulled slightly on each end and bent it in slightly. If you keep the ends fairly tight and they are bent slightly in, you can then take a hammer and finish. Just make sure a piece of wood is behind and on the staple and they will fold down nice and tight. It is a lot easier than doing it on metal inner fenders.

By the way 501paratrooper, is the black bumper coater a paint that is likely to chip or be scratched?

The bumper coater is allegedly a flexible coating, and after putting it on looks like it will be pretty durable too. It went on very light and never ran. Prior to this I painted my lower air deflector with POR15, and it looks painted this stuff makes the plastic look new.

Dave, sounds good let me know.
