What color is this?
What color is this?
Hey Guys,
Trying to match this color on my '68 so I can get some touch-up.
It got painted somewhere along the way and is definitely not scarlet (I wish it was).
Knowing it was way brighter than scarlet, I tried duplicolor GM bright red. Even this is too dark(thought I could blend it in with something else, the pictures tell a different story).
Anybody have any ideas? I've got a bunch of chip marks I'd like to fill, and need to paint over the area where the "S" emblems were so I can put the 442 badges on (they were dug into the paint, that's why the area is so big).

I've got a pint or so left of the scarlet I used. I'll brush a little on that number template that I'm going to send you. It won't be perfect because it isn't sprayed but it should be close. Maybe you can have it scanned. I probably won't be able to do it until tomorrow or Tuesday so give me a couple days to send it out.
The way we got the paint to match my car was I had good original paint on the underside of the rear deck lid. My painter sprayed half the underside with at least four different shades of red until he got it to match.

I looked at the paint I have left this morning and there's really not enough that I want to paint something and use it up. I need to keep what I have for touch up. Instead I took this picture of the label and maybe your painter can use it. I THINK he ended up using a stock paint code that was very close to the deck lid color. Don't go by the color of the drips on the can. The color of the car is much brighter than that (another reason why doing a test patch will be useless). BTW red is the most difficult color to match and I seriously doubt you're going to be able to do anything except paint the whole fender and then it probably isn't going to match the rest of the car

Alternately, there are 'chip repair' services out there, usually a mobile unit that comes out to you to touch up. They've got sheets and sheets of paint chips. They go through them until they match you up ... definitely harder given that they strive to match your faded paint, not just use the factory code. They can usually sell you a small bottle of the paint they mix, or you can just have them dirty their equipment. Cost me about $100 last time I had it done, but I got a buddy rate on it.
It's best to bring them either the entire car or, maybe, one of the bolts fastening the clip. The sample has to not have suffered any sun fade. Nowadays, an expert can blend a color which isn't dead nuts indistinguishable from original
Thanks for all the input guys... really appreciated.
I'm just trying to get it close enough where it doesn't look ridiculous driving this season... no $$ for the full paint job this year (hopefully next).
