I have a 1979 Custom Cruiser in Camel or CaRAmel paint (there are different sources). Unfortunately some previous owner removed the exterior wood grain vinyl the car used to have. Now I want to have it replaced. So here`s my question: Does anyone know whattype of wood the original vinyl decor resembled? Looks like oak to me, but I am not sure. I want to have the decor made locally but it should look as genuine as possible. I attached a picture of a 77, same colour as mine (Camel or Caramel) with the (seemingly) genuine wood decor that I want to imitate. For reference, I also attached a picture of my own Custom Cruiser.
Many thanks in advance! And by the way: What is the correct exterior colour description; Camel or Caramel??
Which car is yours? The wood grain looks to be in good condition on both station wagons.
You might be able to get faux wood grain from JC Whitney or Fusick. The difficult thing is going to be getting wood grain that matches what the factory used. You might also inquire about wood grain colors available in 77. As far as I know, a car could be ordered in different color and wood grain combinations. From the pics it looks like both of those cars are Light Buckskin or Buckskin Poly.
My car is in the second picture. It has no wood grain at all - the lower portion is just painted dark bown. The upper potion seems to be painted in Camel - speaking in 1979 paint codes. (The other vehicle with the wood grain on it is a 77. This one is probably Buckskin according to the chart you sent.
I do have a sales brochure, but it only mentions the availability of wood grain vinyl, while not specifying the pattern (or number of available patterns). I think a dealer`s sales and configuration ledger or something like it might be more specific on wood grain patterns available in 1979. Maybe someone who reads this has one?!
Thanks, that is a great reference (as I own other GM Cars from 1979 as well). But unfortunately it does not contain Information on available wood grain patterns either
