Painting the cutlass! Paint pro's chime in!
I'm going to be using eastwood paints-
Primer- 2-3 coats 20 min between coats. Let stand for 24 hrs then wet sand 1500 to 2000 grit.
Base- 3 coats 20 min between coats, Clear coat 4-6 hrs after, let stand for at least 24hrs, wet sand and polish???
Thanks

I meant, 600-800 after the primer, and 1500- 2000 after clear dries. How much time should I wait to wet sand after the last coat of clear? And does everything else look good?

In all honesty, it's really hard to say, because there are about a million things that can foil a paint job. I would suggest posting a picture or two of your project, and a list of the type of materials you plan on getting, would help. That way, if folks saw or noticed something that might be a problem, it would be easier to provide some input. Good luck with your project!

Should be around 400 for a solid color on primer and 600 for metallic. Paint needs a scratch to adhere to.
I then sanded the clear 1000 wet easy does it, to take off any orange peal, then 2000 wet, and then 3000 wet all with an air advantage 3/32 palm sander. Touched the hard spots by hand. It already shined some before the buffer. Buffing was a breeze. I will never hand wet sand another total car again.
When putting on 3 coats of clear, you are actually sanding the 3rd off. Leaving 2. Good luck with your project! I am not a pro. Just a person with a really nice paint job done by myself.

Where do you plan on painting it at ?
Do you have big enough air supply to supply propper air with out running out or waiting for it to build pressure?
If your doing it in a garage make sure you blow out all dust. I did one full paint many years ago I got the floor and walls wet before pulling my car in so there wasn't any dust. It turned out okay but it was a single stage
paint .

I'll be doing it in my garage. I've painted single stage before, but I have never done prime, base, clear with the sanding and polishing. I'll make a mini paint booth like I have in the past.

Different companies paints require different wait times. What brand paint are you using? The company should have info. that you can read for this information. The 20 min wait times sound good but that may also depend on temp and humidity. Also the wait time between color and clear can vary with different brands. I think you can easily find the specs of your perticular brand of paint online, along with mixing instructions.
Good luck!

Also my old paint guy use to tell me heavier grits have more "tooth" as in scratch, deeper scratches which makes sense. But he also told me finer grits have more scratch per square inch which also makes sense, but i agree that 600 is good for the primer. Smooth enough with enough scratch and tooth for paint to adhere to.
