Earn your "Stripes"?

Ok I'm officially spinning my wheels in google. So - in 1970 was it possible to get a Cutlass or 442 without an OAI hood, but still get stripes?

I can only seem to find like 3 pictures of any 1970 cars that have that paint scheme and only one of those looks even remotely original. It all seems to be a double hump hood without stripes or an OAI hood with stripes.

I found one post that mentioned if no stripe color was specified for an OAI hood there was a default color that would be used based on the body color. But that doesn't really answer my question about the normal double hump hood.

I would have thought that if it was available there would be a fair lot sporting them still.

And if you've got pictures please do post.

If you are asking about the wide stripes on the metal hood, not in 1970. In 1969 you could get the W42 stripes, and the 1969 metal hood is very similar to the 1970 hood.

That certainly explains why pictures are so scarce. Thanks Joe!

There are hood stripes for 1970. They were the pinstripes on the hood planes.

There was (is) a rarely seen optional stripe for the '70 steel hoods. It's basically a triple stripe running down both sides and across the front of each hood "hump".

You can find it in the '70 Assembly Manual.

Consists of a .080 outer stripe, a .125 gap, a wider .20 middle stripe, another .125 gap and a .080 inner stripe.

Put whatever you want on there....the factory stripe or the OAI type stripes or just a more subtle small pinstripe next to a slightly wider one like you see on the side of a non-W option '70 442. They all look great.

The List of Hood Stripes

After some exhaustive searching, I have pretty well nailed down the standard combinations of hood stripes (I think!).

And since I have collected example pictures of them along the way. I figure I might as well post them since I couldn't really find a comprehensive list - none the less with pictures! Some of this is most likely wrong, if so speak up and I'll edit this post - I don't want to contribute to mis-information.

So for:

1969:
This site has a very comprehensive description and pictures so I will just provide a link and give a run down: http://www.69olds.com/stripe.html

Hood Pinstripes:
  • Option Y73 on Cutlass
  • Standard on 442's - Option Y74 was 442's hood pinstripe delete

Hood Panel Stripes:
  • Option W42 on Cutlass (Not positive they were available)
  • Option W42 on 442's

1970:
Ironically this was actually the hardest year to find pictures of the pinstripes. As best I can tell the Hood pinstripes were no longer standard on the 442. (Anyone Verify?)

Hood Pinstripes:
  • Option Y73 on Cutlass
  • Option Y73 on 442's - (No Option Y74, I guess?)

(FWIW those pics are of a re-badged Cutlass)

Hood Panel Stripes:
  • Still Option W42, but:
  • Available only with W25 OAI hood
  • All W25 hoods had W42 stripes (I did find mention of a stripe delete option available special order for W25 hoods, not sure on this though)

1971:
Details are sparse, but from what I have pieced together. The "pinstripes" option got changed to a center line stripe. I'm guessing it would still be option Y73 as I couldn't find any evidence that the previous years pinstripes were still available for '71. (Somebody with 1971 docs confirm?)

Hood Center Stripe:
  • Standard on 442's with non-OAI hood - (I'm guessing Option Y74 would again be a stripe delete)
  • Option Y73 on Cutlass (??? - I'm guessing on code and availability here.)
  • Not available with W25 OAI Hood (Based on W42 Option info)

Hood Panel Stripes:
  • Available only with W25 OAI hood
  • Still Option W42 (??? - though it may have just been lumped into W25 )
  • All W25 hoods had W42 stripes

1972:
Best I can tell the center stripe switched back to more of the old pinstripe style, though its slightly different. My info get real shaky here so if someone with a 72 manual wants to chime in I would appreciate it.

Hood Pinstripe:
  • Standard on 442's with non-OAI hood (i.e. it was included in the W29 Option which turned a Cutlass into a 442 this year) - (I'm guessing Option Y74 would again be a stripe delete)
  • (Not sure if a Cutlass could still get Option Y73 or had to be a 442/W29)
  • Not available with W25 OAI Hood (Based on W42 Option info)

Hood Panel Stripes:
  • Still Option W42 (??? - Guessing )
  • All W25 hoods had W42 stripes
  • Available only with W25 OAI hood (??? - Again Guessing)
