Chipped hood paint on 69 Cutlass S

Hope someone can guide me here. Without getting into too much detail on my stupidity while washing a car I will say that the end result is that I have a paint chip the size of my middle index finger nail all the way down to the metal on the hood. The chip contained a corner where the paint was raised but did not break off. Now I'm freaking out and decide to go out and find the closest nail polish color to cover it up temporarily. Not too close but did the job including somehow glueing the end piece that did not chip completely back to the metal.
I bought the car without ever getting the correct paint color used after market. However, I did remember after calming down that the words Torch Red were placed on the inside door panel by the previous painter when I replaced the drivers side door handle. I did some googling and I think the red that was used was the Torch Red used on vettes between 93 and 2004...at least it looks damn close on the internet. Found a GM dealer with some of that touch up paint and I'm going to give it a go.

So here I stand not knowing how to proceed. I do know I'm going to tape off the area and use nail polish remover with a q-tip to get that stuff out but any suggestions on how to proceed other than giving a body shop 200 bucks to fix it!!! Thanx for any and all suggestions.

Well this appears to be more complicated than I thought for my talents. Does anyone on this board know a body shop with a good painter in the Newmarket, Ontario GTA region that will repair a serious chip correctly. I'm scared to take it to just anyone without knowing who they are. Thanx again guys.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about the umm...chip. There are a few CO members from the GTA so I'm guessing one of them will chime in sooner or later. Blending a repair on a hood will require sanding down the damaged area, and feathering in several coats (primer and paint) to match. I'm not a painter, but if you have a 'unique' color you might end up painting the whole hood to avoid the obvious look of a repair. Most of the shops out here in AB can do spot repairs, but do large blend areas to minimize the impact. That small chip could end up costing a couple hundred bucks to fix right. Oh, BTW paint shops can take that chip and put them in a color analyzer and get remarkably close to the original color from it.

I had done this before on lady and actually - get this - glued the chip back down! You can see the cracks around it, but not as noticable.
