I have a 70 442 that was painted 30 years ago in lacquer with a clear lacquer on top. I love the patina and would like to fix the rust out on lower fenders, then blend or paint below the stripe to tru and match the paint. The question is can you still get laquer and if not can you blend base clear onto lacquer without paint reaction? Need expert advice on this please..Thanks, Andy
Yes Lacquer is available color matched to factory colors... I use TCP Global and their Auto Color Library. They ship UPS
in your opinion whatsthe chances of it matching correctly? Would the stripe be enough of a break to stop the eye from noticing small color difference ?
Well, even with a perfect match, where would the ‘break’ be, up to the stripe? Anyhow, by the time all the rust is repaired, you’re looking at painting the fender. just my .o2

yes I was hoping to paint below the stripe, stripe being the break..maybe I am being to optimistic..
The risk is mail order lacquer has a slim chance of matching 30yr. old paint.
Yes, you can repair with base/clear ((with a lot more options to adjust the color) & it looks like you can get by with using the stripe for a cut line with only a slight blend at the front edge or to clear the wheel opening lip also.

So the base coat sprayed on the lacquer to blend will not lift or effect the current paint?
You can do base over lacquer, but it is still better to use lacquer all the way through. And lacquer is very easy to blend off, even the clear, unlike modern urethane clears.
