72 CS tail lights, head lights and grill - painted black

You can't really see but the 72 in my avatar was my first car right out of high school $500, three gallons of bondo and Camaro fiberglass wheel well openings and I painted it myself. I painted the grille and taillights satin black to match the head light surrounds. Been doing some searching and have not seen any other 72s painted that way except for the Hurst Indy cars.

Since the new Cutlass is Sunrise yellow I think the tail lights and grille would look great black - anyone else with a non Hurst paint these items black. I know - its my car do with it what I want - just looking for some pics. I also think I will paint the hood with the 3 stripe 71 442 stripe down the center. I really like the looks of that. So far this car has been a blast - especially not worrying about a perfect restoration.

HI Steven

User Budg has a 72 w blacked out grills, I think it looks good and I am considering it for my 72 as well, my 72 currently has S grills on it but I have a nice set of supreme grills to install.

Here's a link to Budg s profile showing his grills, I think the color of his car looks really good w the black grills https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums/members/budg.html

Painting mine black was probably the first thing I ever did. Looks much better. I have switched to 442 grilles now, but taillights and grilles have always been black.

when I bought my 72 442 18years ago, the original tailights were black. So when I restored the car the following year I repolished the lenses and painted the surronds semi flat. I have heard that early production 72s all had blacked out tailights to match the headlight surronds. GM later changed all tailights to silver because they were easier to see during the day.

Yes I'm leaning towards the blacked out look. Thanks for the pics and responses
