68 fender stripe

Hello, I am curious if anyone knows if the fender stripe on the 68's was a stenciled stripe? Wild About Cars has a picture of an original and i am just wondering if the measurements there are EXACT on EVERY stripe job?
Thank-you, Jim

Jim, You and Ted (sammy) should get together. He has this same question and has pics on his 68 restoration thread about that. Here's a Link to his thread

That's the W36 option. Here's a Link to the information you may be looking for

Thanks again Allan. I have seen those photos. They help immensely, my question is, were the stripes stenciled at the factory so they were perfectly spaced every time or is it possible to get slight spacing differences?

My understanding is they used a stencil. I've read threads here from folks who talked about that and/or also had the stencils for sale.

Have a look at Stencils and Stripes. They offer the kit for the 68 W36 and also state the stencil was derived from an original car with W36.

We live for questions and discussion, and I think everyone who gets involved with the discussion can respect the reason for your asking. Being informed before the project starts help you plan project goals/timelines and expenses.

I only wish that the people who incorrectly paint these stripes on every single 68 out there thought like you.

By the way, when these cars were new, very, very few 68 442s came from the factory with the W-36 stripes. I can honestly say that I NEVER saw one on the street at the time.

Thank-you for the comment Joe. I love my Olds 442's and just want things to be right! I have a 68 in my shop now that i got from the second owner. He bought it in 1972. It was red, black top and the W-36 black stripe and built in Fremont.

Unlike Joe, I did see one '68 4-4-2 driving around the small down where I grew up. I was 17 years old at the time and the Oldsmobile dealer's wife drove the car around town for almost a year. Then, in March 1969, my dad bought the car. And that's the car I have today! My avatar picture was taken on March 29, 1969, the day after my dad bought the car, and it was his 46th birthday. That's me putting some wax on the hood!
