Uhh, that was supposed to say how high is too high....

I'm leery of taking the stands all the way to the top. Maybe like the last rung of a ladder? And I've never used stands with pins so I'm going to raise the jack back up for extra security.

Eh. Don't worry about it.

Just check the car for stability before you get under it. If you can give it a good shove and it moves, then you should add some sort of support.

Nah, no movement. I'm heading out now to sort of maps things out. Hoping to get the exhaust on tomorrow.

 

What kind of work are you doing?. If it is simply unbolting easy to get to parts you shouldn't have any worries, if it involves lots of pushing and pulling maybe you need wider based jackstands. Putting the jack back under as backup is never a bad idea unless it gets in your way.

Heading out this morning to bolt-up the new dual exhaust. It'll be that easy, right?
So far, so good. Not much lateral pressure on the stands, if any. I got a couple of hangers on last night and it was pretty straightforward.

When in doubt, lumber under always works.

 

Those axle stands look on the light side/weak and have a small foot print.
Safety starts with a quality set of axle stands that are sized for the work you plan to do under the car.
I have a small set for wheel swaps and large sets for when I'm under the car.
This is a area you don't want to buy the cheapest ones out there.

Those have some pretty puny bases on them, I'd also be leery of going to high. The stands I have are rated at 10 tons each and are 10"x11" at the base, they make stands with larger bases and they are cheap. I've seen cars fall off stands and it isn't pretty.

 

X2, if you're gonna do more work underneath buy bigger stands, cheap insurance. Another idea is build some cribbing blocks.

 

Yeah, I'll admit, I picked these up at a yard sale. I saw "3-ton" for $10, no rust and jumped on them. Turns out they are pretty cheap. My others up front are good quality, ratchet, and a larger foot print. I kept the floor jack under the pumpkin as I worked. But I'll get another good set, pronto.

 

If you are eating all the twinkies you are too high lol. JK I can belive no one cracked a joke on that one lol. Just make sure they are good jack stands. NEVER trust harbor freight tools jack stands. We almost had a truck fall of one because the lock failed and broke. You have to trust these jack stands with your life. I have an old but trusty set of matco jack stands. My next project is cribbing blocks to place under the tires. No matter how good jack stands are I just don't trust em .

Yeah, I was surprised myself. But I have to disagree Copper; if you're eating all the twinkies, i would say you're just right

 

I always block mine up at least on one end with 6x6x24" left over cut off deck poles. I just don't trust 4 jacks as it still wiggles a little.
