Recurving Dist. - total adv. too fast or too slow
hey guys,
today i installed my new points distributor from rockauto...stock replacement.
i checked the mechanical adv. and with like 10° initial the distr. added more than 30° or so till around 4.800 RPM.
this is the kit i'm playing around with:
http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...1042/overview/
first i installed the "bushing" to reduce the mechanical advance..so now its only adding 24°...my setting now is 12° initial and 36° total.
problem is the RPM. the kit came with a set of weights and 3 sets of springs. the best i could get was 36° @ 2.500 RPM (weights and golden springs from the kit)
i played around with a lot of different combinations (mixed springs, weights etc.) but total adv always comes im too early (like 2.200 RPM with the lightest springs)
any ideas how i can raise the RPM for total advance? i'm shooting for 2.800 - 3.000 RPM
thanks
kay

took her for a short ride today..ran like hell with the new settings!!
what would be the problem with adv comming in to quickly? pinging?
just asking cause i feel like i heard some detonation...but maybe thats just caused by the total timing?

The only downside is pinging. My 455 LOVED a lot of initial timing. Made a tremendous difference in low end torque. Now I barely touch the gas pedal to get my '66 Toronado going
If you have pinging, try stiffer springs, but have as much initial advance as you can get away with.

Your engine needs higher octane fuel to run right, whats the octane level in your area. Also if the detonation is at low load cruising it may be a problem with your vac advance coming in and putting your total way over 50. Have you tried using your old weights and new springs.

detonation is at WOT so the question is...how do i know if it pings because total adv comes in too early or if total adv is just too high ??
i played around with all the springs and weights i have (i.e. factory and accel recurve kit) but these are either to stiff or to weak
as for the fuel..i did a 50/50 mix with 102 and 95 octane.
iirc i tried the old weights and the new springs..gonna try it again and let you know.
...and afterwards maybe back off the total adv a bit..like 2° in the first step.

FYI, I have personally never experienced the advance coming in too soon and causing pinging; it's always been too much overall advance.
Many racers run the distributor "locked" so there is no mechanical advance - the ignition timing is always at 36º or whatever max advance is.

Just because you don't hear "pinging" doesn't mean it's not detonating.
Mentioned this many times, I was standing right next to an iron headed 455 on the dyno when we added 3* of timing and lost 14hp. Never heard it ping once.

would you say that you can raise the timing till you see a loss in power (on the dyno) and then just back it off some degrees?
or in other words..does detonation always comes with power loss?
