1963 Jetfire update

Been working on a few projects but this is the current update.

Turbo down pipe.
Waldrons did a exhaust system for me. I was not happy with the flanges they made and I was able to get a correct flange from Jensen racing. Waldrons was able to install it on the pipe they made. Came out great and they are a pleasure to work with!!

Interior and rugs

Installed the rugs, console and interior. More to go but starting to shape up. My son has been under the dash trying to get the lights, wiper and electrical systems working. A few photos below of progress.

The boost is only 6 psi but no computer controls back then.
Thanks for the reply!

Back in 1963, Motor Trend ran an article about hopping up the Jetfire. They actually disabled the wastegate and isulated the crossover pipe to increase boost. They maxed out at 13.5 psi. The saw an 80 hp increase from the as-delivered number at the flywheel.

OK interior is complete for now. Next is the exhaust. This should be fun.

Joe
I wonder how long the motor will live at that boost level??

I have a lot of stories about this car. Getting some of the parts cars was a real challenge. Parted out 8 different Olds Jetfires and Cutlasses, some for just a couple of items. I have a real good story I will save for a later date. Installed the hood on the car today and will post a few photos on Monday. One very cool story is where the motor came from. Received a call from a guy selling a Jetfire engine. He had a complete running motor. We talked about what kind of car he had it in. He explained it was not in a car but a tractor. Thought this is was odd so I asked why? It was in a tractor pull tractor. He could out pull all the tractors in the area but not one guy. His only option was small block Chevy to compete and that was why he was selling it. I took a chance and it was and is one sweet running motor. When I sold the car the first time a good friend want to take it for a test drive. He owned one new and now the car was 20 years old. He and my dad took it out and when they got back my father said I drove it like a girl! He said Clint was able to get rubber in all four gears. It was quick in 1987 and I expect it to be better. Have a 3:36 posi on the work bench to clean up before I install it!! I will get the next story ready in a few weeks.
Ken

Never saw this thread until now, but just read back through the entire thing. What a great job you have done on this car. So much work. How cool is it to have your old car back and almost complete? That's amazing.

Thanks for the post! What you see is only since 2009. Saving a few stories for a later date.

Me too. Also have a bunch of improvements. Have a rare 3:36 posi, rear sway bar, new 1/2" lower springs, new shocks. After all that I have a front disc brakes and then maybe 5 lug conversion so I can use olds rally wheels.

Nice to see your progress with the car, Ken. Looks great so far. Must be very gratifying. Hope to see it when it's done. It's an odd one for sure, and of course I mean that in a good way.

Just installed all the exterior trim. Next weather strips and gaskets. Took it out for a couple mile drive. Checked out OK. Getting closer.
Will be making a list of parts I will be looking for to complete and update the Jetfire.

Just put 110 miles on the car in the last week. Runs great. Had the muffler shop install a Waldron's exhaust system I purchased. Four hours later and a bunch of $$$ but came out great. Still have a few gaskets more and a bunch of other items but the list is getting shorter.

Great to see your progress with the car, Ken....did you find that NOS rear bumper? One on the car looks good from the pics anyway.

The bumper is original. Worst part on the car. Has a small dent but the plating is falling off. Chrome polish took a side mostly off. If I can't find one will get it re-plated in the fall. For now putting miles on it. Waiting for my son to come down. Fill the fluid take with Turbo Rocket Fluid and get it on BOOST and see what it will do!!

Absolutely beautiful job on a very special car. I spent 14 years doing my "other" car, (non-olds) so I know all about the ups and downs and what a big commitment you made to getting this done. Hope you get a lot good drive time this summer.

Thanks for your kind reply! It has been a long process but very rewarding! Since retiring it has kept me plenty busy. That is a good thing. Still lots to finish up. Installed the glovebox liner yesterday. Also painted the first wheel white. 3 to go! Today another wheel. Still waiting on a pair of horns to see if I can get them working and installed. Need to get the brake lights working. Lots to do but that's the fun.
Be well
Ken

Ps: I think it's time for a good story about gathering parts back in the 1980's

Quick update. Painted the wheels white. I think it's a big improvement! New wheels and tires are for this winter. Not sure what we may do. Change to 5 lug or order custom wheels. For now drive the wheels off of it.

OK here is the latest update. Just installed a posi rear new shocks and 1/2" lowering springs. The rear is from a 1961 Buick Special and there were a bunch of changes made the Job much harder than needed. A little farmer engineering and its in. Going to get the car to the Hershey AACA car show this Oct.
