Z-Gate in a 70-72 Console

I am considering a B&M Z-Gate shifter in my 71 Cutlass. The shifter seems to go through the pattern within the opening of the console plate. I am thinking about using a piece of neoprene with a slit sandwiched between the plate and the base to cover the mechanics. I might need to raise the console slightly.

Has anyone done this before? Any thoughts?

in the early 90s i had a Z gate and considered doing that same think. i really don't remember why i didn't do it but i think it was because of the shifter was to tall and i was going to have to cut the console. i ended up just using the shifter with it's cover that came with it. it may work like you were saying to raise the console a little. you could look on eBay for a console that has the shifter area broken and make something work out of that.
