Guys:
I am installing a new exhaust system on my 66 Cutlass, the car has a Big Block engine, mild street cam and big tube headers, also putting on flowmaster 2 1/2 tail and extension pipes. I am looking for input about mufflers and noise level, what brand have some of you used in the past, looking for a nice Muscle Car sound, but do not want an uncomfortable sound or driving experience. Thanks for any input or information.

Love my 2 1/2" Pypes with the Racing mufflers! Nice rumble yet not too loud.

 

Muffler sound and volume is a very subjective thing. I personally dislike the (no)Flowmaster mufflers. They may have an obnoxious drone, but at least they are among the most restrictive mufflers in testing. I use Walker Dynomax Turbos almost exclusively, and have since I built my first 442 in the early 1970s. I do have Magnaflow on my 62 F-85 wagon, only because it fit better than the Walker.

I have 45" Thrush glasspacks on my 71 98. It drones a bit but the glasspacks are so long they reduce the overall volume. IMHO, it's not obnoxious like those trucks you hear coming down the road.

 

I am putting an entirely new dual exhaust system on my 54 this weekend (actually the muffler shop is doing the work). It is a very different car from what you have. I just wanted a nice mellow sound that would be period correct for the car. I was originally going to put Porter mufflers on it. I listened to lots of them on the internet and then I found some called Brockman Mellow Tones and that is what I wound up going with. The have steel packs and glass packs and I went with the glass packs. Instead of holes in the core it actually has louvers. They were also less than half the price of the Porters which are pricey at $100 each. I think the Walker Dynomax that Joe mentioned probably give the best muscle car sound. As he said, it is a very subjective thing.

That is an interesting muffler. It is actually an oval glasspack instead of a turbo muffler. It looks to be very well built. It will probably be a little louder.
