Mounting a pass door mirror

Hey, so I recently purchased both mirrors, I know left mirror is self explanatory, but the right mirror I'll have to drill into the door. Has anyone done this before? is the inner door structure designed for it? I want it to look original, but a little afraid to drill through my door.lol any advice?

Is this for the '72 Cutlass in your profile? If so, you not only need the holes, but a support plate so the screws don't pull out of the door skin sheet metal. I used a piece of 1/8" aluminum plate for the inside support.

Here's a post about installing a passenger side mirror.

It is also a good idea to put a wide piece of masking tape over the area where your are drilling in the event you drill bit decides to scoot. Use a centerpunch to mark your holes.

The mirrors I bought came with the gaskets and I believe the inner metal plate. I can't see how the plate goes into the mirror base, so it has to be for inside the door.

Yeah I plan on doing that, I just don't want to put the mirror in the exact same place as the left and factory was offset or vise versa. I'm trying my best to do it correct, it's just nerve racking drilling into a perfect door.lol

Sport mirrors or chrome mirrors? The mounting is different

So you need to replicate the "keyholes" that are factory-punched in the driver-side door. I just did this on my 69 Cutlass wagon. I made a template from the driver side holes, put masking tape down on the passenger side, and marked on the tape from the template. I used step drills to make the holes and an air saw to cut the short straight section. The two anchor bolts on the new mirror dropped right in. You tighten from the top using a small allen wrench through the holes. Remember that since you are turning from the small end of the bolt, turn counterclockwise to tighten. This took less time to do than it took to write this.

Is there a reason why the holes are different sizes? And what are those 2 little holes for? Do I need to add those to pass side also?

The two little holes are for the sport mirror brackets. Your chrome mirrors don't use them. The two different size holes are just to allow for manufacturing tolerances if the punch is slightly off.

Ok, I hope I don't have to drill into another body part again. That was very stressful. Lol I think I did pretty well, looks like factory. What you guys think?

All good in the hood. Make sure you can see out of it.
