Gas cap question...

Good morning Oldsmobilers!
I was going to recondition the gas cap on my 72 Supreme but I dunno if it's original. It has a hole in one of the finger tabs so I'm thinking that it should have a tether, but all the pics Ive seen don't have the hole for the tether....can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Dave

Were they vented, and did the OEM have the hole I mentioned?

To me and I may be wrong, that doesn't look to be the right cap with that deep of a skirt.

If that were true it would save me some work. Cuz I've already bought an aftermarket replacement.

Here's what made me think it was original. It says it's NOS.

This is an NOS OEM 1972 Gas cap.

The cap IS vented, contrary to what others have said.

Profile of top is defined. The link to the other one is not even close.

Yes, the 72 cap DOES have a deep skirt, and Yes there is supposed to be that little hole in the side of one tab

The gas cap in that link looks like it may have a good chance of surviving one year.........................................MAX.. ...........................before it's eaten away.

Often times you can drift into nearly auto salvage yard & ask to see there box(es) of a thousand OE gas caps. Many will have them sorted out pretty decent into boxes/bins based upon manufacturer, year, body style. Worth a try unless you're going for OCA ponts.
They clean up real nice & easy on a burnishing wheel.

IMO, that skirt is of the correct length for the OE cap. Most of the new caps do not have as deep of a skirt as the OE & you can figure this out real quick if you have the OE rear license plate frame. That longer skirt fits nearly perfectly into the slots of the license plate frame to hold the license plate frame a distance away from the filler tube. Many of the after market caps do not have a deep skirt length and they don't fit into the license plate slots for holding open the license plate frame from the filler tube.

Like I said I was not sure, the caps I remember seeing had a shallow skirt and 1 that was in between the op's and the shallow one. On a side note, a vented cap is not to let pressure out of the tank but to let air in so not to form a vacuum.

Agreed. And on top of that it's downright fuggly.
