Hi guys, so in the process of re-building my Rochester BB from my 51 Olds 98 Rocket. Everything was moving along smoothly until I got to the part where I have to remove the pump piston (the instruction set with the kit calls it a piston and spring), In my maintenance manual it looks like they refer to it as the pump discharge guide, spring and discharge ball.
Unfortunately it's stuck and there is no way it will slide out (car hasn't run for about 17 years) Anyhow it's in there very tight, have tried every penetrating oil but nothing will make it budge, I was able to tap it down a little so it does move but they were pretty forceful taps and now I've knocked it further in. I was hoping that someone might have an idea on how to remove it or has come across something similar? I'm very close to drilling it out but not sure if there is an easier way?

Compressed air on the nozzle(s)?...be careful it may rocket itself out!

Try SLIGHTLY warming the area surrounding the piston with a heat gun, put more penetrating oil and walk away...repeat...repeat...

Be careful using heat, you wouldn't want to melt the carburetor. It's not like it's a cast iron exhaust manifold.

Try submerging it in a bucket of Pine Sol solution for a week or two.

 

Thanks Sugar Bear and Olds 64! A couple of possible methods, I have heard good reports on Pine Sol, might give that a shot, do you mix the it with water?

 

Yes. The Pine Sol bottle should have directions for normal and strong solutions.

 

Hoppe's #9 Gun Solvent is worth a try ! It works pretty good.

If all else fails, could drill a small hole in it and use a small tap or screw and try to move it a little at time might get it to spin. Good luck and take your time.

 

is there a plug on the bottom of it? if so drill out the plug,knock out the trapped piece, then clean the bore and tap the plug hole for a new plug(set screws work good)

 

Thanks again everyone for the suggestions, Chris this was also what I was thinking but doesn't appear to be a replacement part in my re-build kit so if I screw it up will really set me back. There is no plug at the bottom Oldolds88 but in my research I've read a couple of guys saying basically the same, to drill out from the bottom, poke out then fill with JB Weld but again if I don't hit the spot exactly could be a big setback. The good news is I'm soaking the whole carb in Pinesol and it's surprisingly working really well (except for my problem!)

 

I got turned on to Fluid Film, picked up a can at Home Depot. Better than any penetrant I've used so far. Good luck
