Atmospheric pressure doesn't cause the cylinder to fill with air in and of itself. A void is made by depletion of gasses and a vacuum is made by the downward motion of the cylinder. Physics 101.
atmospheric pressure cannot do anything. It is the same pressure as the surrounding air. There has to be a void or vacuum created one way or another in order to move the air. Look at the leading edge of a wing on a plane. Its shape + forward motion pushes air upward away from the wing. This creates a void or vacuum. Eventually this vacuum is so great with increased speed, that it literally lifts the wing to take up the vacuum created. This is getting silly. Hope you have a good one.

I'm an aerospace engineer. I got my degree from MIT. That's not how a wing works, either. The shape of the wing doesn't "push" air up. It accelerates air over the top of the wing, which lowers the pressure. It's called the Bernoulli Effect, and it's the same way your carburetor venturi works. You're right about one thing, however. This IS getting silly.

Not certain, but i think im missing some material on this donut.


So could that leak be causing an inaccurate reading at the o2 sensor? And would that cause it to run a little rich? If you've got fresh air leaking into your exhaust near the o2 sensor then wouldn't that cause a lean reading? Don't know enough about the tps to know if it's related. I have the tps to put on but really wanted to get this leak squared away first. Gonna have to bolt it back together and go get what i need, come back, and try again.

Could someone post the best way to change the tps? I haven t pulled the air cleaner back off yet, but i plan to after i get this exhaust gasket squared away.

That gasket came out of the exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe? Yes that is your leak. Maybe (doubtful) it could suck in air and skew the 02 sensor, but mostly it will be a noisy exhaust leak. But sure replace it. It was good you could get the bolts out! I just wanted to explain something about the early CCC system. (and I am not a expert by any means). I think what Joe is trying to say about the tps code is it is a symptom not necessarily the problem itself... If you were to compare the car and the early computer system to your body.( I know, bear with me on this) If your foot started to hurt would you go into the Doctor and tell him you need a foot replacement? Maybe if you found a pebble stuck in your shoe and took it out, your pain would go away and your body would quit telling you something is wrong with your foot. Same as the codes. If a code to do with the TPS is triggered That does not mean the TPS needs replaced, it is telling you that there is a problem. Ahhh maybe I can't explain it properly..... That is why you need the manual to go further, and as I said it a earlier post these era cars are the most complicated SOB's ever if you ask me.

thanks a lot. And i ger that an error code coming from a sensor doesn't necessarily mean that component is bad. I actually found the donut and the spring bolt that had a bad spring. Had to go two different places but it worked out. I cranked her up and she definitely sounds much cleaner now. Much better throttle response too, and no unburned gas smell. Light came back on so i checked it and it said tps again. Backed it up a little amd it idled down. Got on the road and it started stumbling badly. Got back in the drive way and it started running good. So i took it down the road again. It ran good. Gonna clear thw memory and crank it again to make sure it's still throwing a tps high voltage code. I understand there is a proper procedure but also understand that i need this thing running well now, and don't too much have time to wait on a service manual that i likely can barely decipher. Your example made sense too. I coulda just changed the o2 sensor due to a code or symptom denoted by the computer without further investigation. I would have wasted time and money and perhaps created a head ache if the sensor snapped off in the manifold. Visual inspection showed multiple exhaust leaks. This lead to the lean code. Fixed the leaks and stopped the achy foot....for now.

If tps voltage out of range high is the only code showing then is it pretty safe to hypothesis that thw tps itself is bad? Gonna check it out, but it isn't like an exhaust leak. Unless it's physically apparently broken then im not gonna know one way or another. I suck with electrical....have a feeling im finally gonna be learning a little bit about it though.

Can the air horn be lifted on one end to swap the tps, or does the whole top have to be removed along with the gasket? Probably best to just remove it amd replace thw gasket if i had to guess. Didnt realize i needed a gasket.....freakin noob (myself).

Is this gasket relatively universal among 4 barrel quadrajets?

How do i determine the model carb i have if the gaskets arent brand interchangable?

Should i buy the rebuild kit at about 80 bucks? Carb seems to be in good working order from what i can tell.

is all that needed to change the tps correctly? Always been taught to change any gasket that you break the seal on...guess i better stick with that.

Any input would be appreciated.

Well, finally got around to swapping TPS. First time i ever had to go into a carb. I enjoyed it though. Drove it around a little afterwards. Seemed much better. Today will be the test though. No codes of yet. Hope it stays that way.

As an aside; do they make overload springs or helpers for these cars? I ride around with it loaded down 95% of the time, but don't care for the back end to perpetually squat.
