Was the V88 code - RT Stripe Delete - a mandatory option for all the Daytona's, or did this Daytona come from the factory without the stripe around the quarters and spoiler?

 

That was standard ops for the Daytona. The R/T tail stripes (Scat Pac) had to be deleted. The factory cranked them out to homologate them for NASCAR. The story is that dealers ordered 2,000-3,000 of them, but due to the late year introduction only 503 were built.

In the course of my business I purchased a 1963 Split window Corvette from the original owner who was a modeling engineer for Chrysler. It turns out that he was the individual to mock-up the original clay mold for the Daytona, which in an actual wind tunnel. He got the job by default as he was the youngest guy on the team and no one else wanted to be away from home during the project. His name is Joe Robb and he just recently passed away this year. RIP.

 

Very interesting story about the Mr. Robb and his participation in the making of one of the most dramatic cars ever made. I remember back in '73 just after getting by driver license and looking for my first car. A local Daytona was for sale. I would had bought it but it had a white "tail" stripe that stuck out a mile away. The only thing on my mind back then was that there was no way to hide from anyone with that three foot white spoiler sticking up above every other car.

Then there was the Banana yellow Superbird that was for sale at that same time with an asking price of $2000. The "only" reason I did not buy that one was because the kid who owned it had riveted what looked like a half a garbage can cover on the hood for a scoop....

 

I've owned a 1968 charger r/t, a 1969 charger r/t, and a 1970 charger 500 many years ago now, but none had a body like the one in white shorts!

 

If I only knew then what I know now. I would have bought a bunch of those. Its hard to believe that such an unpopular car when new would bring the money they bring now.

 

The next years 1970 production of Superbirds was approx 1,935. They were a wild looking ride back then and even more so today.

 

Daytona has been Sold.
