I have a 327 sbc that seems to have some sticking valves from setting for over a year. Is there some method of unsticking the valves without removing the heads. I was told that if you put a quart of transmission fluid in with the engine oil and let it run it might unstick them. This engine is in a 64 Impala ss that I'm redoing. Any help will be appreciated. MMO, rislone, transmission fluid all will help. If your gas is old it turns to varnish and causes the problem.

 

If I were in the same circumstance, I'd use Marvel MO too or seafoam, I like it too. They both have their place in the market of symptoms like this.

What is the symptom? Is it a ticking noise from a sticky valve lifter or is it a misfire/low compression from a valve sticking?

 

I agree; let's do an accurate diagnosis before applying the solution.

 

It is missing on a couple cylinders, haven't figure which ones for sure. Also seems to have a little tappet noise on the right side. Also firing thru the carb when accelerating. Probably going to pull the valve cover and see what is happening. Not sure anything will free them up but worth a try. Thanks for all the info. Larry

 

I'm wondering if you may have wiped out your cam.

 

I'll just have to pull the valve covers and see. This car was driven from Illinois before it was parked and seller said it was fine.

 

I have had great luck with straight atf for freeing stuck rings. I would try that and something like Kleenflo Combustion chamber cleaner down the carb. A flat cam on a Chevy, that never happens.

Things to check:
1. Distributor cap for carbon tracking,
2. Broken rocker arm,
3. Bent pushrod,
4. Collapsed valve spring,
6. Collapsed lifter,
5. Camshaft lobe(s) worn flat.

Looks like the lobes on the cam for the number 1 and 2 cylinder exhaust valves are wore down. The rockers are barely moving on these 2 valves. Tried tightening them but to no avail. Anybody got a mild cam for a 327 chevy( I'm serious). Thanks all for the help.

 

A new cam and lifters is not that expensive. Sorry yours is worn, that's usually the issue when your popping out the carb.

 

It is almost certain the cam is the problem; but, you may want to check for bent pushrods and/or broken rocker arms first since they have to come off anyway. If it is a rocker arm, it is usually the exhaust rockers that fail. They tear open at the bottom, inspect them for wear if you replace the camshaft.

I'm fairly sure it is the cam. Watching the rockers while it is running these two aren't moving very much on the push rod end. If it were a cracked rocker that end would be moving about the same as the others. Just my thoughts.

 

You'll know for sure once you pull the intake and lifters.
