Not many W-30 ragtops out there. Let alone as nice as yours. Original motor going away is a tough swallow for many.

Keeping the original drivetrain is a financial decision, nothing more, nothing less. If you decide to sell the car later on, it will be worth more money if you can include the original drivetrain with the sale. Even if it is not installed in the car, having it will increase the value of the sale. In the end, it's your car and you can do as you please.

I am NOT a purist by any means but if it was my car, I would do the LSX swap but I would keep the original drivetrain in the garage. If that day came where I had to sell the car, you could probably get $30k+ more for the car with the original drivetrain as part of the sale.

Go on the Holley website & search for "white box" oil pans.

Same pan without the fancy box. I bought one for my conversion & quality was great.

Which route did you end up going? Vivid or Holley White Box?

The LSX engine is a great setup. Those engines are pretty bullet proof and don't mind revving out.

If you ever decide on an overdrive trans, go with a 4L85e / 4L80e. It's pretty much a bullet proof trans, based off the TH-400 but with overdrive and computer controlled. It will fit right in the trans tunnel with no modifications.

Plan on some governor and/or valve body mods to get the trans to shift at a favorable RPM.
The factory 4800-5000 rpm shift point will not do it justice as around 6500 will now be the sweet spot.

Looks really good! The LS engines are legendary for power and reliability. With 4-bolt mains and stock heads that flow 300+ cfm (.600 lift). The LS3 can easily make 600HP at the crank with just an upgraded cam. Plus with EFI, you can get great MPG and easy tuning.

The Olds 455 while a torque monster, requires a lot of specialized parts and machine work to make it last, especially if you start making more power. I know a couple of machine shops that now refuse to even work on an Olds engines because of hard to find parts and reliability issues with the weak bottom ends.

You will want to get an overdrive trans later on behind the LS. LS engines also like to rev out so 6,000 - 6,500 RPM vs the 5,500 shift point of an Olds 455 need to be taken into account.

What did you end up doing with the numbers matching 455? Did you sell it or keep it?

It doesn't bother me. I am far from a purist. Numbers matching means nothing to me.
At least you got some money $$ for the engine block.

The 4L80e is a great trans. Get a good controller for it or you can use the Holley Dominator/Terminator to control the trans and the engine EFI.
