454 in a 70 Vista Cruiser

I bought a 70 VC, the motor is toast. I have a newer 454 i would put in. Yes I know it is TABOO to the true Olds Lovers, but i was wondering if anyone has done it. I need to find motor mounts or will the Chevelle ones work.

This going to be a functional custom with Hotchkis Susp. I have not seen a Vista done in this way, but i want this to be cool.

Please do not abuse me with the all of the Olds only in Olds stuff, I understand your love. Please understand that I want to build this car to be cool for everyone to enjoy. If it makes it better, the motor will be Gold and the Valve covers will say Oldsmobile on them.

All Advise Welcome

Doc

I did that 20 years ago with my car easy to do just use the chevelle mounts and drop it in, if you are going auto use the chev trany for 4 speed use the chevelle Z bar the frame's on a body car's are drilled for everything you need to bolt on did mine in a weekend

Yes, the motor mounts and brackets from a Chevelle. Your also going to need a chevy transmission, some exhaust mods, starter wiring needs to move to the other side (I used a ford solenoid and an extended battery cable), all accessory brackets from the chevy motor, etc...

If you want the vc's gold with Oldsmobile script then go for it, but you and I both know that there are some easy ways to id a bowtie from a rocket by just looking at the top end and any person who is halfway familiar with them will know immediately anyway. I would recommend just keeping the 454 as it would be.

Thanks Doc, I'm not familiar with a lot of US aftermarket suppliers, now I'm a little better informed.

Getting started

I start pulling the old motor in the morning. Plan on cleansing the entire compartment and painting everything.

I did this exact mod with my 67, it's very easy. What transmission are you using.

I wish you luck with your transplant. I just got finished putting a 454 into my 64 98 Custom Sport, I used a 350 TH tranny. I had a lot of fabrication work for mounts and tranny mount. I also had clearance issues with the oil pan hitting the centre link. You can get aftermarket pans with cut-outs, that fix the problem. My biggest issue is headers, I will need to get a custom set made. I think it's a great fit, and cheaper than building a 455. Good luck!

I bet yours was a bit of a challenge. In your case I would think that the stock manifolds and larger exhaust pipes would work fine. I ran a 440 mag, with stock manifolds and 2.5 inch exhaust in my Fury and installed exhaust cutouts. Man with the cam and open exhaust it sounded sweet and performed well.

I have an interference issue with my upper A-arms, and I can't squeeze the stock manifolds in. I wish I could, it would be a lot easier.

That presents a challenge 64custom, I know that a swap like that into your model is very problematic from others who have done similar swaps.

Doxchopshop, that ought to cruise nicely with that trans. Take pictures of your install.
