that ugly, loose-hanging hood insulation

This has been bugging me for years. It's finally time get some answers.

I replaced the under-hood insulation pad on my 1966 Ninety Eight several years ago, but it's not staying on well at all. Drooping in places, a corner where there's a hole torn, etc. It seems to me there should be more holes for those plastic clips. But I believe there are only holes at each corner, and maybe one in the middle. Not enough.

Anyone have a solution?

Paul

I took some mechanics wire and wrapped it around one of the rear push pins. Then stretched it to the front push pin and wrapped it around it and cut off any excess. Did this on both sides. Its not factory but it works.

If you can get mostly behind the insulation I have used 3M # 77 spray adhesive work well, spray both sides, let mostly dry and stick it up. Holds good for years... Tedd

Huh, for some reason my brain didn't venture into adhesive territory. That's probably how they came from the factory, which explains the need for just a few clips.

When it comes installing a new pad, other threads seemed to stir a debate between the hard side down and fuzzy side down crowds. But I won't go there .

Thanks for the feedback.

The factory used trim adhesive plus the retainers on all of the big cars I have seen. It looks like the same brown glue they used on the trunk trim. I have used the 3M spray trim adhesive with no issues. Hope this helps,
Dave

My 66 Cutlass has five clip points. Four corners and a center clip. 3M spray works best. In my 66 Maintenance book there is a drawing showing where to spray both on the hood interior and and the hood insulation. Worked but I had a couple of " go backs".
