I got a passenger side manifold to replace the broken one on my 64 394. Today, even with my daughter being sick, my wife left me alone long enough to clean it up, and coat it with Eastwood's high temp exhaust coating, to match the driver side. I put both of them on today, with new manifold studs in the heads and new hardware.

My dilemma is that the felpro gasket kit has me confused. I didn't use the gaskets on the heads, as they didn't have them from the factory and both of my manifolds were not warped. But I got 4 triangle shaped gaskets, and a doughnut in the kit. According to my diagrams I've found in my PDF service manual. They only have a gasket between the heat riser and the crossover pipe, and another between the crossover and the passenger manifold.

Would it be correct to assume that another gasket is needed between the riser and the driver manifold, kinda sandwiching the riser between two gaskets?

Also, the doughnut I got is too small for this application. It is very loose in both the broken manifold and the new manifold I got. It seems to fit alright between the crossover and the passenger manifold, but logically, it isn't supposed to be there.

In the diagram I have, it also looks like the passthrough bolts have a spacer and a spring on each of them, between the downpipe connection and the passenger manifold. I can tell you that my setup did not have either a spring or a spacer in there. But that might have also helped its complete failure (after a lot of years).

Is there someone out there who has any idea what the heck I am talking about and willing to help me out in this matter?

Here's an illustration from the 1963 parts catalog. 1964 should be the same.
The left hand side of a dual exhaust has slightly smaller pipes. That's why you may have donuts or gaskets that are too small.

 

Thanks, Charlie. Your pic looks a lot like mine, with only slight differences. Your pic shows that there is a gasket on both sides of the riser. So that answers that question. I'll be doing some hands on research at the parts store to see about getting a bigger doughnut.
