1964 Starfire Gas Tank
1964 Starfire Gas Tank
If I can not restore my gas tank with sealer, is there a company that makes tanks for the 1964 Starfire? Will a tank for an F85 fit?
Not to sound like an idiot but is the Starfire considered an 88 or 98?
Thanks
Rich

63-64 88-98-Starfire use the same tank. The repro tank companies say Impala tanks do not fit, but they sure look the same to me.
F85 tanks will not work.
Starfire is considered a B body, which in Oldsworld is 88.

I don't think anyone makes reproduction tanks specifically for these cars. Chevy, yes, but not Olds B or C body cars. If you can verify that Impala tanks would fit as rocketraider suggests, then you can go that route. Otherwise, you'll need to find a good used tank off of a donor car.
From what I have seen the Chevys have gas tanks that are very close but the necks don't match. I have seen one or two people buy the Chevy tank and weld the old neck onto the new tank.
There should be somebody near by that does gas tank restorations. I know of 3 withon 30minutes of me.

You would think that with all B-bodies using essentially the same body shell and filler neck location, what would work on one would work on the other. Yes, I know the Pontiac tank is under the trunk floor where the Buick-Olds-Chev are between the trunk well and axle.
Just for grins I dug out a 1969 Motor Age repair manual to check capacities and it lists Buick and Chevy as 20 gallons, and Olds as 21. So I guess the Buick crowd can use a Chevy tank easily. They have more in common than most folks realise anyway.
Craig, do you know what the difference is between Chevy fill neck and Olds? Is it that internal vent on the Olds? I know in later years the necks could be bent to match up with the filler opening. The tank in my green Starfire is nasty and has had sealer work, but neck appears good.
I really need to get that damn car roadworthy again, but making a living takes up all my time.

I have been having the same problem with my 61 88 so I am taking my tank in to Tank Re-Nu to have it restored. They do a nice job. Do you have one by you? They can repair anything.
It looks like they have one in your location. Gas Tank Renu - USA, New Jersey Finger's Radiator

I've done this one before and if it saves some grief the Chevy tank is in no way able to be installed where the Olds Starfire tank came from. The dimensions are really quite different when you put the two tanks side by side. Gas Tank Re-nu is your best bet!!!!!
While we are on this subject can anyone tell me where I can buy a filler neck grommet for my 61 88? I thought I had one but Steele Rubber's grommet is too big. They also thought that Chevrolet was the same.
Thanks

I was gonna buy an Impala tank tonight. I'm glad I read this first. I thought they were close enough to fit. I found one on ebay with the filler neck in the right spot then you have to cut yours and connect with rubber. But if an inch here and an inch there means it wont fit then I'll stick with a fuel cell.

It's not so much of the neck that's the problem, it's the dimensions of the tank itself. The Chevy Tanks dimension of it's diameter that it won't fit between the Trunk floor and the back of the rear axle Housing.....
It's just too Fat!!!
