Dual gate shifter
Dual gate shifter
Hello I purchased a dual gate shifter for my 72 cutlass. The person I got it from told me it was on a 71. I need to know will the neutral Safety switch that's on my 72 will work since it's a floor shifter car.
I believe both the 1971 and 72 used the neutral safety switch at the base of the steering column. It sounds like your car has a regular floor shifter. If so you should be in good shape, just make sure the linkage to the column is kept on the car.

It's not too difficult, just take your time and post questions as they arise. The search function isn't the best here, but if you can try it to find old threads that may walk you through it.
You may already know that you need to cut out the hole in the console larger for the dual gate. There are marks cast into the plastic that you can see from the underside. Then you'll need to purchase a different plastic piece with the wood grain as its shorter for the dual gate. The linkage I mentioned in the previous message should already be hooked up. So locate the correct location to mount the dual gate brackets and hook the cable to the transmission lever just like the single gate cable was.

The long slot is for the adjustable stud that connects to the shifter cable. The other two ears are for the backdrive rod, which looks just like the column shift rod.
Ok so I don't need that linkage since I already has a floor shifter car but not the dual gate? Believe it I had ordered that yesterday. So I should be straight. This is how the car look now I did floor pans, both fender patches and both rear quarters. Windshield frame was rusted out. I can't believe how much money oldsmobile parts are and if it was a chevelle I think I would of been saving a lot of money lol
