68 Cutlass S 350 V8 - I got nothin'! HELP!

OK, so a few weeks back I tried to jump start my 1968 Cutlass and I couldnt get it to do anything. The battery wouldnt take a charge either. So yesterday I went and got a brand new battery and still get nothing. Not even the starter click. I get the interior lights and the buzzer, but when I try to start it, the lights go extremely dim, to nearly out and nothing happens. Where should I start to look for the short?

Thanks!
Jon

I would check the battery cables. If they are old, they could have internal corrosion and could cause the exact problem your talking about. Also, check the mounting location for the negative cable and where it attaches to the engine. It could be loose or dirty.

Be sure and check to engine ground. At that age I would start cleaning all the connections. How long has it been since it was started? I guess it could also be a starter but I am betting on the connections.

Thanks for the info. I started to look at the ground connection briefly and found that it is still connected to the engine block. But I will do the necessary clean up of all the connections and go from there.

Thanks
Jon

I am so glad I found this forum. You guys nailed it! Though it was a simple cause and fix, I would have never thought of it being that quick. I wish they were all that simple.

THANKS!
