Hello,
Just introducing myself, my name is Dan and I live in QLD, Australia.
My wife and I own a 1979 Pontiac Firebird LHD with an Olds 455 / 8-71 roots blower that likes to drink E85.
I was doing research online for some aftermarket engine internals and stumbled across this site. Hoping to make contact with a few knowledgeable people and research/gather advice on appropriate parts.
My wife and I bracket race/drag race this car.
Hope to chat with you all soon.
Until then, Cheers!
Dan
Welcome to the site. Would you be willing to share more information about your build?
Sure. We bought the car initially as a naturally aspirated drag car that had nitrous spray.
The we removed the nitrous and purchased a blower kit from DC Blowers.
8-71 stage 3 blower. Olds 455 with apparent good internals.
We recently did a head gasket and decided to strip the engine down for inspection, as it was the only thing we hadn't stripped and rebuilt since purchasing the car (recently rebuilt the TH350 trans with all Coan hard parts, new 3.5" chro moly tail shaft etc).
We found lunati pistons, stock GM rods and a stock N 455 crank.
We are looking for some advice RE pistons, rods and cam to suit a blown setup. Ideally want to drop compression, new pistons and rods, replace the cam with a more suitable item (JM5.6 hyd cam was found) and determine if the N crank will handle 8 to 10psi boost.
we have cast iron K heads also that appear to have had large valves fitted, decent dual springs, etc.
We also run dual holley 850 double pumpers modified for e85 (e85 metering blocks etc) and MSD powergrid ignition with ICE 10A module, ICE dizzy, coil and leads with MSD crank trigger.
Let me know if you would like to know anything I may have forgotten?
Welcome to the site. What kind of time does it run?
We have had countless issues since buying the car, slowly coming to an end now though (we are running out of original pre purchase items as we have rebuilt everything after we do the engine) but it did run a low 11 with me backing off several times due to being a scaredy cat when the front wheels left the ground.
So I would say, with a proper transbrake launch, I expect a mid ish 10sec pass, with the 8psi pulley.
A correct camshaft to suit a blower would also assist here greatly also I believe.
