Hi, I’m James. My wife and I just bought a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible. It has the stock 350 rocket engine with a Muncie three speed transmission and Hurst gear shifter. Hoping to meet new people and learn more about the car. (Up dated info)

Welcome. Nice car. FYI, your car has a Muncie three speed trans. Only the shifter is from Hurst. Interesting combo - 350 2bbl with a three speed floor shifter and console.

 

Welcome to the group... Nice Cutlass... Definitely purchased as a base line model with 3speed standard trans, no A/C or Power brakes... Nice to keep it all original if possible...

 

It's actually more interesting than that. Base equipment for a 1970 Supreme convertible was the 350 4bbl trans and a Saginaw three speed manual with column shift. Bucket seats were standard but not the floor shifter or console. The low compression L65 2bbl motor was a $33.70 credit off the base price. The M14 HD Muncie 3spd with Hurst floor shifter was an extra $84.26. The D55 console was another $61.09 on top of that. A/C still wasn't that common in 1970, especially on convertibles. Interesting choice of options on this one.

 

Thank you all for the comments and helpful information. We figured since it had a Hurst shifter, the transmission was a also a Hurst. The car was my mother in law who bought it brand new in 1970. It has 116,000 miles and still has the original clutch.

I'm curious as to how you know it's the original clutch.

My mother in law bought the car new in 1970 and my wife (her daughter) knows the full history of the car. Plus we have all the repair receipts.

 

We are stumped on this one as it is currently missing. It was supposed to be I the Glove box as my wife had seen it 7 years ago when she went to a car show with her mother. We know it was not throw away but must be in paperwork we have not come accost yet.

 

Really cool. I also would keep it as it is and try to resist changing it to 4speed and adding power brakes and steering. It seems so unusual for a Cutlass Supreme 'vert to be so basic as most Olds' were sort of higher level cars in the day. I love it! I notice it looks like it has the standard Cutlass/F85 grills?

Thanks for all the responses!! Today we took the car to our first local car show. I was impressed with attention the car received. As for future modifications, the only thing on the list is a new exhaust system, carb rebuild and new shocks. Car will be left as close to stock as possible because we know it is what makes it so rare.

Is that a CB radio mounted under the dash? Does the car have a whip antenna in the trunk? If so, you can mount them to a trailer hitch instead of using a magnetic base.

 

Looks like an 8 track under the dash. Does it still work? Very cool car. Amazing to have been iinhthevsame family for its entire life. Your mil had great and unique taste in cars.
