slim jim question updated

As I mentioned in a previous post, the pontiac and olds slim jim are not externally the same. Can I swap the tail and what would be the bell housing from the olds slim to the pontiac slim. Or does anyone know where I might find this info?

You sure you're not comparing a Pontiac Super HydraMatic to the Slim Jim? Pontiac used both 61-64; SJ in Catalina/Grand Prix and Super HMT in Star Chiefs and Bonnevilles. Olds used the Slim Jim exclusively in all series.

Only external difference I can possibly think of between Olds and Pontiac Slim Jims is the trans-to-engine adapter plate. Switching tailshaft housings should be no problem at all. Just make sure you have the correct tail housing for your speedometer as some applications have no provision for the cable.

If you swap out the bell housing/flange both Roto Hydramatics are the same. I used one from a 62 Catalina on a 62 98.

Thanks for the input. I have a link to the craigslist page that I found the transmission, http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/pts/2963688838.html. If anyone has a minute to look at it and tell me what they think it is that would be appreciated. The physical differences are the length of the tail and the depth of the flange/bell housing. Mine is about an inch and this one is substatially deeper. I have not proplem with swapping the parts if they are compatible.

You know, I had forgotten, I switched out the tailshaft also. Sorry, it has been over 30 years ago when I made the swap out. I bought the Pontiac slim jim for $10.00 at a Phillips 66 gas station. It was a great deal, even for back then.
