Newcomer from France

Hi, my name is Patrick and I am new on this forum. First, excuse me if my writing in English/American is not perfect! I'll try to do the best!

I own a '64 F85 Cutlass convertible, with the V8 330 ci. I own it since May 1994, and I am very happy about it. It has the Jetaway 2 speeds automatic transmission, hi compression engine, Rochester 4BBL carb and I recently fitted a new dual line exhaust (originally a single line). This car has been sold "factory new" in France, so the tacho is in kms and I have the user manual in french. It has never been restored and is in original condition (body and paint, engine, upholstery, etc...).

The car runs fair, but unfortunately, begins to send little clouds of oïl by the exhausts, particularly when accelerating from idle. A motorist has measured the compressions, and two cylinders, one of each row, are 9 instead of 11.5 for the others. He thinks that the oïl piston rings are worn out or broken.

So, I will have to overhaul the engine, and I think that you guys in this forum will be able to give me good advices and information, regarding your experience in this matter. In advance, I thank you for all you could bring me.

I think export cars are pretty neat. And your English is quite good so please don't worry - all I know is "Je t'aime... moi non plus."

Welcome to the site... Looks like the weather in France treats vehicles quite well... Interesting to note the right hand passenger rear view mirror mounted on the fender... Is that necessary for a vehicle being imported to France from the factory, or was it added after purchase?

Thank you all for your welcome.

For the rearview mirror on the passenger side fender, it was not mandatory when the car was produced, in 1964. This mirror has probably been added by a previous owner, and the fashion in these years was to install them on fenders, even for the left side. ...which makes the adjusting of the mirror very tricky!

Note: french rules make mandatory a right side mirror since 1979, for station wagons and delivery vehicles. Although all car brands install now 2 external mirrors, the right side mirror is still not mandatory on other vehicles, regarding the law... France is a very complicated country!
