Newbie here - looking at 70 Toro GT
Hi, guys.
I'm new to this. Have owned several older cars when I was a kid (1957 chevy bel air, 1966 mustang, 1969 mustang, 1969 firebird convert, etc), so the old car thing is in my blood.
Recently, I came across a 1970 Toronado GT. It's white, with tan/gold interior. It has the W34 package, I believe. It's a "custom" model.
From what I've read, there weren't many made. I've never owned an Olds before, but this car looks sweet. I have yet to see in person, but will soon.
Any thoughts on whether I should jump in?
Any pitfalls I should worry about (besides sheet metal)?
Thanks!
Turk

Welcome to CO. With your experience in older cars you probably know all the normal things to look for, I haven't owned a Toronado so cannot help you with specifics but we do have a contingent of Toronado owners that can help.
Thanks!
The Toro looks to be in really good shape. I haven't seen it in person yet, but hope to soon. I'm hoping it has the notched out rear bumper for the dual exhaust. I know it has the hood "GT" emblem.
Thanks!
Is this the guy in Mass or RI on Craigslist?
I saw that one too, but after my latest buy, my wife would kill me if I dragged home another.
Please do tell us how it looks (and post pics!) - if it's in as nice shape as the pics show, it's well worth the price. I sat here at work in New Hampshire last week staring at the pictures and gritting my teeth...
- Eric
(also, if it looks good, but you just can't swing it, and the price improves more, let me know and I'll risk a divorce...)

The W34 package meant that the car came with the optional 400 hp version of the 455. (It may have meant other things, too.) The base version was 375 hp.
In 1970, the Toronado Custom was by far the more common. Production of the Custom was 23,082. Production of the standard Toronado was barely 1/10th of that at 2,351. Base price of the Custom was $5,216 and of the Standard was $5,023. Given that it cost only 4% more, I'm not surprised that most buyers went for the higher-end model.

Sure. A few. In my album, on my User Profile page.
Get a chance to look at that Toro?
I'm still kind of drooling a little (which bleeding, which I would be if I brought it home...)

Hi, Eric.
Nice car!! Older cars don't survive well where I am (east coast) so am always jealous when someone finds one in great shape.
Serves me right for trying to post while at work.
I think it was, "I'm still kind of drooling a little (which is better than bleeding, which I would be if I brought it home and my wife saw it...)."
Or where I am in Maine...

I think I missed out on it
I see it is relisted by another seller for $5500.
Is the whole idea to buy cheap and flip these?
I actually wanted a car to own forever (god and wife willing)....

I guess I can focus on finding my convertible now. I am drawn to a 69 Cutlass or a delmont...

Damn.
Did you ever go see it?
I'm curious whether it held hidden horrors or whether I need to spend my remaining years kicking myself for not telling my kid, "No Santa this year" and buying it.

About 8-9 years ago, I could of bought a trple white 1969 W-34 Toronado, with 96,000 orignal miles(Texas car). The insides was a a bit moldy, but a good detailing job fixed that. Asking price was $2500, and I think Andy sold it for $1800.
It's been a long time, with a wife and two kids later...plus, I was a kid..I only knew to put gas and oil in it. ha ha.

What are you worried about anyway?
Heck the blue 1963 Stafire my father had for 19 years, my mother NEVER HAD A CLUE. The really cute part was mother would see this Starfire at my Dad's a/c shop in S. Portland (thinking it was a customer's car), and she would say," Boy this is something you would really like!"
My father had to sell the Stafire in 2008, because of a bad encomy.
In 2006 I caught Hell from my Mom for buying the red Toronado(she was in MY HOUSE, while I was at work and she flipped out when she saw I took out a 401K loan(for red W-34 Toronado)).
So 2-3 years I'll be looking for a #1-#2 condtion '63 Starfire.
