Newbie to Forum & Olsmobiles Too

I recently purchased a 62 Starfire Convertible and felt like I could learn from the forum. This is my first Oldsmobile since working at a Buick / Oldsmobile Dealership in the late 60ty's. It appears one of my first challenges will be the Top switch. I am in hopes of being able to repair it. We will see. I lurked awhile before joining. Lots of information to try and get your arms around on this site. Looking forward to learning but I am thinking I won't have much info to share for awhile at least.

Welcome. The 62 Starfire is my favorite big Oldsmobile. We need some pictures of that chariot. You have come to the right place. There are lots of good folks here with tons of knowledge who are glad to share it.

Ha, I was wondering why it looked so long in the first pic. Welcome. Get yourself a factory Chassis manual and the Fischer body manual.

Weezer, I had not seen a Continental kit on one either. I searched on line and could not find another. I am fairly certain this can't be the only one
D. Yaros, 77K + but no idea if that is correct. I have no history at all. As a matter of fact other than a couple of 69 Toronado's in the late 60ty's early 70ty's I have not owned an Old's.
oldcutlass, thanks, I am hoping someone on here might know the car and be able to share some history
M371961, I have a manual on the way. I will look for the Fisher book

I got the tires aired up today, put in a new battery, primed the carb twice and it fired off an ran like a champ. A little lifter noise at first but soon that went away. Pretty happy so far. This has been kind of like a box of Cracker Jacks as far as knowing what I have. When I hit the switch, both the rear antennas came up and the radio started kicking out music. This is starting to look like fun.

OK men, need a bit of guidance here. I have been hunting for 1962 Fisher Body manual for my Starfire. I have not found anything as of yet. Not an original, reprint or CD. Zero. At one spot I stumbled into it was suggested that there was not a Fisher Body manual for 1962 Oldsmobile and that the Service Manual covers everything. Can someone shed some light on this mystery for me please. Am I hunting something that does not exist? Thank for any help or input.

That's exactly right . There is no separate Fisher body manual ,
In fact , the 1962 manual is only a supplement . That only covers the things that changed between 1961 and 1962 .
To get the information you need , you will have to get a 1961 Olds service manual . Plus a 1962 supplement .

As to the continental Kit they were a very popular accessory and could be ordered and installed by the dealers in the mid '50's to early '60's. Later the aftermarket companies
Jumped in and started making them for everything from Croslets to Rolls Royce, but I agree I never saw one on a '62 Starfire. It is very rare. Larry

Rocketowner, I found a Post on here from a Darksidemxer in 2008 that I think speaks to this car being for sale. Built by his Grandfather, one Al King. This is purely a guess on my part but based on what I have found so far I think it would be a good bet.

This could have been Al King's car, he had a couple of them in Florida and his grandson was trying to sell it. It had the dual antenna's and the conny kit, the car was loaded with options when I talked with him before he passed away.
Good luck with the car and with Al having it before you I'm thinking it should be in great shape.

Oldskeeper, I would say this just about nails it down then. It is hard loaded, has the dual antennas and I removed a couple of Florida / Oldsmobile Club stickers from the rear side windows. The last 10 years have not been real kind to the car but it is mostly just knick knack stuff and scrubbing / detail items. It drives out pretty well even with the square tires. I am having fun with it. I took the Warden out last Sat afternoon for a drive and she thought it was pretty cool too.

Woodeye47, Al king also had a light blue convertible with this set-up. He was thinking of changing the side panels so they matched and was going to paint the car before giving it to his grandson. Al king owned a transmission repair business and had several stores, he also had a huge stock of parts for these cars. I think you have a nice car and will enjoy it for some time, there is always something to fix but you won't have any big items to replace.

Question of the day. Has anyone got any tips they have used to freshen up the brushed side trim on a Starfire? My trim really does not look all that bad but I think it could look better and I don't want to screw up what I have and go backwards. No scratches or dents to speak of but I do think it could be brighter. Any tips shared will be appreciated.
