Thumbs up Newbie from England dropping by to say hi

Hi
My name is Mark Ashman from the UK and found this great site after surfing the internet trying to fix the gearbox on our 1955 Oldsmobile Rocket 88.
We have had the Olds for nearly 8 years now and am still as impressed with it now as I was when we got.
My Wife Yvonne and I run UK Street Machines and asked the last owner if he would bring the car along to form part of a display at an indoor car show and fell in love with the car there and then.
Oldsmobiles are pretty rare over here so it will be nice to chat to other Olds fans.

Welcome Yvonne & Mike,

I'm another UK Olds fan, I envy you your car - great pics!.

I don't recall seeing it at any shows, whereabouts do you live, what shows do you get to?. I'm from Margate in Kent btw.

I'm sure you will be both entertained and better informed from this site, certainly I have.

Roger.

Hi Roger
we are up in not so sunny Northampton we have only taken it to local shows up until recently. I used to run the NASC and when we left 2 years ago decided to spend more time using the car and I absolutely love it.
Just got it back from paint and am now looking to put discs out front and do my best to get those bumpers chromed.
Mark

Welcome aboard, love the 55's myself and I bet you really turn heads in the UK.

You mentioned that you were going to have your bumper re chromed, is it more expensive Europe than the US.?Some areas in the states re chroming has become extremely expensive....Lost in the fifties ...Tedd

Thanks everyone for the nice welcome its a great site you have here.
Hi Ted I have just sent of for prices on the bumpers but last time I asked ( which was some time ago ) they were about $600 each bumper Im just hoping that they may be a little cheaper as 2 huge plating factories have opened since then which are just 50 miles away.
Your soft top by the way looks amazing Ted.

Like the Ninety Eight and especially the English countryside background. Anglophile here!

Mark, Rolls-Royce were using HydraMatics back then, manufacturing them under licence from GM. Surely there are still 1950s Rolls around whose owners will know of someone in UK who can supply parts and repair service for those boxes.

had the auto box serviced at Paragon Motorsports new filter Rock Oil with a bottle of Tranny Honey ( odd name! ) and she now runs better than ever, I looked into the Rolls connection and a local guy has given me an old box from his Roller which I will now rebuild as a spare for my Olds so thanks Rocketraider for that useful snippet.

Welcome to CO

Gotta love the 50's when your driving an Olds. Nice ride. It would be a dream to tour the English country side in a Olds. Small roads but still nice

Thanks guys, as for driving the Olds around the English countryside it is a nightmare what with the narrow roads, people riding horses and worst of all tractors coming the other way. I try and avoid them at all costs give me an open highway any day heading off down to the Keys with Chuck Berry blasting out.
Reply for Ted I have had the price for re chroming the bumpers and it works out at around $350 a bumper which is much cheaper than my last quote so fingers crossed are being plated over Christmas

In California that would be a killer price. Most of the platers around here box everything up and ship it off to Mexico, quite often losing some of your parts along the way.

Just curious how do you find Chuck Berry on your AM radio? ....Lost in the fifties....Tedd

I really want to do Nostalgia but our main event of the year is the MoparEuronationals just two weeks after that so would cost alot in fuel alone as I still drive the 200 mile trip to the pod and back in the Olds. Maybe I should invest in a trailer but either way sure we will catch up at an event somewhere along the line, cheers, Paul
