Newbie ‘63 Starfire in OK

Just purchased my first classic car at the age of 40. Retiring within the next couple years from the military, and looking forward to cruising around in this machine!

I’m looking forward to learning from you all!

You have a good rear bumper and the car appears reasonably complete so you're ahead of the game. If the transmission functions well that's also important.

You going for a repaint or leave the patina (looks clearcoated)?

Not a lot of reproduction pieces out there. Fusick Automotive has most of what little is offered.

Yours is a late build car. The Starfire script on the coupe was moved from the roof sailpanel to the front fender about midway through 1963 model year. Big reason was to consolidate front fender stampings between coupe and convertible.

You'll find that Starfires are a different animal. Not only for the hot engine, special trim and bucket seat interior.

Recommend acquiring this ASAP. Original print copy only. No reprints, CD-rom or pdf's.

Thanks for the info!

It does indeed have a clear coat over the patina. I haven’t decided yet whether to address this and keep the look, or go back to the original Willow Mist.

Likewise, when addressing the interior, I’m not decided on whether to embrace the resto-mod patina ideas, or attempt to get it back to its original glory.

I’m in Yukon. Stationed at Tinker.

Can’t wait to get some brakes on this thing and start meeting folks up at coffee and cars! Hope to run into you all!

Look forward to seeing you there. I haven't had my jalopy at Cars & Coffee for awhile, but I went this month.

Remember, it's the Remington Park (in front of the Zoo/Science Museum by the horse track) parking lot on the first Saturday of the month. Get there early if you want a choice spot.

Very very cool car. Welcome to Classic Oldsmobile. I am loving your car. I love white interior cars. So many things that Iike about your car. Those wheels are worth the price of the car. Keep us updated. Cool cool car.

Thought I saw a little green on that fender!

I have a pair of 64 coupes. One is Fern Mist (same as 62-63 Willow Mist) with white interior and the other is Bermuda Blue (same as 62-63 Cirrus Blue) with blue interior.

Robski had a 63 so he's probably the closest Starfire guy to you.

Be careful with the left side wheels when you're doing the brake work. I think 63 was still using left-hand lug nut threads on the left side wheels.

Also, the speedometer drives off the left front wheel. When you pull the hub and grease cap for brake work, the grease cap has to index the speedometer drive cable when you put everything back together. Joe Padavano grease cap picture:

Brakes are up first!

Thank you all for the Welcomes and the info so far!

I’ll poke around some more threads, but I’m curious if anyone has input on this:

The gentlemen that sold me this car mentioned upgrading to 4 wheel disc brakes and changing the master cylinder to one with more than one hard line.

This seems like great advice to me! But, I’m very inexperienced when it comes to classics.

Does anyone have any strong views on this modification? Or any experience with a compatible B body brake kit?

Thanks in advance!

If the brakes have already been changed then how are the brakes currently working? Modifying brakes correctly is difficult and aftermarket kits can sometimes do more harm than good. Did the previous owner tell you what kind of brakes he installed?

Hey Olds,

The owner I purchased from hasn’t touched them, and they’re definitely not working. I think you may have seen a reply above where a guy was talking about brakes being done.

I will definitely, at minimum be going through the whole existing brake system, and shopping for parts to get her road worthy.

I also need to drain the tank, and check all the fuel system out. It hasn’t run in a while (~2 yrs). Have video of it driving though, and the motor isn’t seized. The trans has at least park and first. So, fingers crossed!

Welcome! Nice car. That's quite the collection of cars in the background. Is that where you purchased it from?

You can get a sealer kit for your fuel tank if it's not too far gone

https://por15.com/products/fuel-tank-repair-kit

Just make sure you wear PPE when you seal it.

Very helpful! Thanks!

This is probably exactly what I should do. The tank is not so bad on closer inspection.
