New Member from Canada

New member from Canada. Have a 1972 Cutlass Supreme to restore from the ground up. I have a southern frame waiting for it. It is pretty rough. I just hope the shell is salvageable.

I am the 3rd owner. Our family doctor bought it new in 1972 from a local dealer. My grandmother then bought it. Then I ended up with it. I even found a syringe bottle under the back seat that had been there for at least 20 years .

NOTE: It has buckets w/column, A/C and Rear Defrogger. I was told the doctor ordered it that way.

Some pics. The pics are old, so there is more rust now obviously, body tag rivet has popped out, etc.

New bucket covers were put on around 5 years ago, car used briefly after that, then the tranny blew (it was a daily driver for a while). It has been sitting for about 4 years just rotting away in the little jungle around it. it ran like total crap (no bottom end at all) after I put in a Crane Cam 472/484 I believe (not sure on exact specs). Everything else was pretty much stock including the 2.73's, torque converter, pistons, etc. and assumed the cam was too big.

We have a family of groundhogs living underneath. They dug a hole beside the tire, and the car eventually collapsed into the hole. Once a garage is up, resto will start. Groundhogs don't pay rent so...

I would take a pic of the inside of the trunk, but there are hornets or yellow jackets living in there right now. The whole floor is gone. the tank really should be on the ground by now.

Thx. Hopefully, the pics will get better!

One thing though... can anyone decipher my cowl tag? I can't even read the codes to the left of A51 for starters. Looks like 'OA'

I know the car came with buckets and is Silver Pewter Metallic in color. Did it originally come with a vinyl top though? When I got the car, it had vinyl and looked original.

I'm sure someone can decode the body tag for you. Looks like a decent project. Get it out of the bushes and into your driveway so you can start working on it. There is no time like the present!

Thx.

I managed to find a NOS rear bumper recently. Just have to drive over to the US once my passport comes in to pick it up.

Who is the best source for quality Olds parts? I am looking into front/rear lenses/housings and bumper bolts right now. I am assuming the dealership has nothing like this anymore. I want quality US or Canada made stuff.

Good find on the bumpers! Especially nos. I get my parts through JH Restorations in Windsor. They get them from the US and ship from their shop in Windsor. You do pay the exchange, duty etc., but it is easier than going across and dealing with the border and the traffic. The phone number is 519-737-8902. Ask for Jesse. They are excellent to work with, and also do metalworking and restorations. Let me know how you make out.

I use Fusick too for parts (not that they carry much for my year!) and have not had a problem. I have also used Supercars Unlimited (http://www.supercarsunlimited.com/) and have not had a problem.

Wait,
That's just too damn confusing now...
I was half way through this thread thinking it was Shane (Oldzzy) haha....
Now there's another Oldzy??? And he's Canadian too....
Damn, I'm gonna have fun keeping from confusing these two...lol
Welcome though man, nice to see another Canadian member.

BTW, Shane, I did also get to read your updated thread too. Looking real nice man. Keep it up. I'll get over there one of these days...

Cowl tag and pics

My man,
Your cowl tag first of all identifies your car as a 1972 model (ST 72)
34257 is a Cutlass Supreme 2 door hardtop coupe
LAN means it was built at Lansing Michigan
255720 is the plant's sequencing number for vehicle production
A51 is an option package I'm not familiar with. However, my car has option package A52.
970 is the trim code your car was built with.
14 14 is your paint code. Pewter silver lower and pewter silver upper

Now, your pictures show the car with a black vinyl roof. It was not produced at the factory with it, or the cowl tag would show 14 B. I think that your original owner probably had the roof installed by the dealer.

Other thing that sticks out in your pictures. This car has the Strato bucket seats, but a column shift transmission selector. That is really unusual and probably a custom order. Personally, I don't know why it would be like this. Buckets and console go together like Baskin and Robbins.

My cowl tag:
2008_0314MILLER0002.jpg?t=1254881710

As you can see, my car is a (33687) 2 door Cutlass hardtop coupe (Cutlass S)
It was also built at Lansing
Plant sequencing number is 442325 so it was probably built quite a bit after yours.
Trim line 940
14 14 paint code same as yours.

I've had my car repainted, but here's what it looks like now.
