Smile New Member With 78 Olds Cutlass

My name is Dave, from RI, live in MA. I just bought a 78 Cutlass Supreme. I had always liked this generation of Cutlasses. My friend in H.S. had a father who was a die-hard Oldsmobile guy. I remember riding in his Cutlasses. I also delivered papers as a kid to Lloyd Long Oldmobile in RI.

Anyway, I picked up this Cutlass Supreme with an interesting story. It has only 80,000 miles and was owned by a GM employee who worked in the GM plant in Framingham where the car was made. I have close to 30 years of receipts and the owner was meticulous. For example, she recorded in a ledger when she got it washed and how much it cost her.

It needs a few cosmetic items which I'll post later on what I need. Here are some pictures:

I also have a Camaro which I have owned for 23 years and that is also previously a one owner. So I am happy to buy this Olds which has a history I know about as my second car.

Welcome, that is a clean looking car, I had a '79 back in the mid '80's, decent car, though the 231 V6 was a bit anemic (o.k. a lot anemic)!

Thanks guys. Overall the car was kept up. In fact, she had the headliner repaired about 10 years ago, the rear springs replaced, and the transmission overhauled about 14 years ago. I need to confirm if it is the TH200 or since she worked at GM got it switched out to the TH350.

I need to figure out the rough idle when the car is warmed up and find some specific parts for the Olds engine. For example, the rubber boot on the air cleaner where the Crankcase filter pipe is inserted. The existing boot is torn.

You can get the rubber boot at the auto parts store in the HELP section. If you bring in the old one they can match it to a new one.

If your car is idling rough it sounds like you might want to do a tune up.

Thanks everyone.

jeffreyalman: I plan to take more pictures this weekend after I clean it up a bit. Right now it is competing for time from my other car which I need to get ready for GM Nationals the following weekend.

Olds64: It is not the grommet on the valve cover, I know you can get those anywhere, but the rubber grommet that is shaped like an elbow on the air cleaner that the metal tube is inserted. I'll take a picture.

Hmm...

If it is the one I am thinking about then you should be able to get it in the HELP section. If not then you could surely get it from Fusicks. You just might have to pay a bit more.

Just a heads up for you. If you ever get up to Brockton, Ma then both Everetts Auto and Brockton Auto on Thatcher street have a handfull of early 80's g-bodies in their yards. Each one has at least one Cutlass too so feel free to scrounge for those hard to find little parts. Everetts actually has a 1980 Cutlass with I think a 307 in it that I was looking at today.

Thanks bammax. In a couple of weeks I will get my list and check that place out for some parts.

I will try to post more pictures. Upon closer inspection this car had the bumper replaced with a non-olds bumper I think. A little mystery, but others might be able to figure it out when I post those pictures, maybe Tomorrow.

Here are some updated pics. The car had a minor accident, the front bumper and right fender was replaced. I would like to swap the existing bumper for a very good Olds bumper. I am curious if anyone knows what this bumper is from? Chevy Malibu perhaps?

There are two rust spots I need to take care of before Winter. Both are at the rear of the chrome rocker panel strip on each side. Also the rear back of the rear bumper has some 'dry' rot. I need to figure out how to clean that up and stop the corrosion from going through the external chrome bumper.
