I'm new to the Oldsmobile world. I recently traded for a 58 Super 88 convertible. The car has full power and air conditioning and I was wondering if any one could help me with finding production numbers. I'd also like to know how to find out if the car was originally equipped with the J-2 setup.

 

58's are great cars loaded with lots of chrome. Full power and factory air are great options to have. Does it have the J2 on it now?

What is J2?

 

My car has a J2 "Tri-Power or 3 deuce setup on it now." I don't think the three 2's is original. The car is solid and complete and came with lots of extra hoods and trunks and fenders...even spare 1/4 panels that I plan to sell to help finance the restoration.

 

The J2 motors had higher compression pistons and a different cam the way I understand it. With out paper work I believe the only way to tell if it is original to the engine is to take the engine down and verify the pistons and cam. Maybe someone else on the site nows a better way. You could also contact the 57 Olds specialist at OCA he might be able to help you.

I am not an Olds expert (am learning like you), but have done some homework on the J2 Option(s)...The different cam and rocker arrangement J2's are a rare find at 312 HP - this was a race car option and one that Richard Petty used at the racetrack. But the J2 that is common at 300 HP uses a straight 371 Cu. Inch engine - and the only difference is the tri-power option (3 each duece carbs-see reference material below, taken from a posting that explains the different J2 options very well-IMHO).

As for knowing if the car came equipped with the original J2 option, from what I have gathered with other 57 Olds owners I know, it is that most did; however, soon after this option caught on and grew more popular, several 4 barrel carb 371's were given the modification by their owners. And how to validate if your car was originally J2 equiped is anyone's guess, unless you have factory documentation. I do not have it for my 57 Olds, nor does my original invoice have any line entry about the J2 option, but I have the option on my car.

The J2 Option: 300 HP Vs. 312HP

What is the difference (if any) between the 300hp and 312hp versions of the 371 with J-2 option? How can I tell by looking at the engine? Thanks!

The 312 hp version has/had a solid lifter cam with adjustable rockers. the rocker covers are dimpled to allow for the extra height needed for those rocker arms. Outside of that I'm not sure of any other difference. you will have a very difficult time seeing one as few were produced and were used in racing, nascar I'm told. Folks that have been around longer than I have said they've seen none or maybe one. I've heard of 2. Authentic?? The Feb 57 Hot rod has one on the front cover in color. 300 hp is what you see in cars for sale, intakes-carbs on ebay. I have a 300hp/smooth rocker covers J2 in a 57 2dr 88 coupe. Have 2-3 extra intakes I've accumulated.
