Question new to the forum, working a 67 CS

Hey I have had a 67 Cutlass Supreme since 1991 sleeping in my garage, I have been gathering parts along the way. Need some assistance on replacing the trunk springs (torque bars). I have a donor that i can pull from. Any and all help is welcome. thanks Brian

Welcome , post some pics when you get a chance

Sorry, I haven't had the pleasure of replacing trunk springs. This is a helpful group and I am sure some one will chime in that can help!

I have done a few with no know how or proper tools. For me I needed a helper. The last one I did was on the 67 Cutlass. Only one was broken. I used a small 6 inch pipe wrench with a piece of pipe on the end to twist/tension the rod and get it in place. I also had to pull out on the center of the rod so it was short enough to get it in the slot.

I just did some checking and there is a 71 Nova on youtube showing procedure. The Olds is very similar. He used vice grips and I prefer my 6 inch pipe wrench with a another piece of pipe on the handle for leverage. The main thing is you have to bow the middle to get the end shorter so it can go into place. Another set of hands is most helpful to hold the other end in place as it wants to slide out while trying to put the other end in. You work on the side with the 3 notches while the other side is already in place. The top notch is the least tension and the bottom one the most.

Welcome! If you have a service manual (can order online) the procedure with illustrations is listed there. In my 66 manual it's on page 9-6. They might have the manual on the wild about cars website. Good luck.

You can make the tool using a piece of pipe with notches cut on the end, and a carriage bolt through it crosswise a few inches from the end.
