Hello,
I am a newbie to classicoldsmobile .com
I have a 71 olds cutlass that has been converted to look alike a 442 (not by me). I bought it because I couldn't afford a really 442 and wanted the look.
I know its not original and I don't try and pass it off as one.
The former owner added a hurst shifter and fudged it to make it work.
I have had problems with the car not going into park and staying there.
I have to turn the collar on the steering column to the left about 1/8 of an inch after putting it in park and it will stay there if I don't the car depending on grade will roll.
I have set the transmission in park loosened all the linkage turned the column all the way to the left re-tightened the linkage and if I move the car and put it back in Park the car will roll. If I loosen the linkage, back the collar on the column off about a 1/4 of an inch move the car put it back in park turn the column to the left that 1/8 the car stays in park.
I was reading the other posts about the neutral switch I have found the switch at the bottom of the steering column. Could this be my problem any suggestions will definitely help. I was told to just disconnect the linkage and run without but that's not how I want the car to run.:

I am in Southwestern Ontario.
Could you please explain what you mean by back drive linkage.
I thought I had moved the linkage at the tranny to steering column every which way possible to make it stay in Park without turning the column that 1/8 inch.

The backdrive is a safety feature that only allows the key to be removed in the Park position. It's linked to the lower part of the shift bowl. Look under the hood and to the left of the steering column intermediate shaft you'll see a tang that has a linkage dropping down to the transmission selector linkage. Chances are really good that's what's out of whack and not adjusted properly.
