My new baby

All my horn and electrical problems are fixed. Much help from you all and the mechanic from MGM. I've been so worried about those problems that I knew that it's been running rich. I have only been putting in high test gas because I've heard that older engines don't like the regular stuff. I've never owed a 4 bbl carb. Is there a simple fix?

This car will run fine on regular gas. It is a low compression engine, 8.5:1. Use Sta-Bil ethanol treatment with your fill ups to counter the ethanol in todays gas, or it will wreak havoc on your fuel system.

If your engine is running rich then this is what you need to do a tune up. Use a timing light, vacuum gauge, dwell/tachometer and a set of feeler gauges. @$$uming your Olds has the OE points distributor.

1) Take your distributor cap off and set your point gap with the feeler gauges.
2) Reinstall the cap and start the car to set the dwell.
3) Use the timing light to set your timing.
4) Adjust your fast idle with the dwell/tachometer.
5) Use your vacuum gauges and set your idle mixture screws to maximum vacuum.
6) Reset your fast idle since it might be a bit off after adjusting your idle mixture screws.

Don't forget when you are setting your timing you must disconnect the vacuum advance canister vacuum hose from the distributor and plug that vacuum hose. After setting your timing, re-connect the vacuum advance canister vacuum hose prior to adjusting your A/F mixture screws.

Here's a simpler way. From a guy with over 50 years doing tuneups on these cars.
1. Leave your feeler guages in your toolbox.
2. Start the car and adjust the dwell to 30 degrees. If you just installed new points, they will be factory adjusted close enough for the engine to run. If not, dwell can be adjusted while cranking.
3. Follow instructions 3 thru 6 above.
