Map llight question......

Can I respond to threads without receiving email notification every time someone else joins the thread? That would be nice.

Also, while cleaning the interior of my 72 Cutlass, I found this little thing. It moves back and forth, but doesn't appear to do anything. It's probably a silly question, but what is this thing?:

Sorry, I guess I should have posted this to a different forum, but I don't know how to delete it and start over. Thanks for your help and patience.

You can reply to any thread at any time. Just click the subject and at the bottom is the message box.

The little thing that moves is for the courtesy lights. There is a light right next to the little thing, and what's supposed to happen is that light, and the floor lights come on. If nothing happens then all the lights are burned out. It looks from the picture that the light is on, unless you had the door open when you took the picture.

Mike...... I believe that when I turn that light on in Teepo, it's the only one that comes on. I think. I don't think the floor lights come on with that one. At least not on Teepo. I think. Lol! I'll shut up now....

I don't know if every Cutlass has this, it may be part of the light package. So I'll just say that on my 70 Cutlass the floor lights come on when I flip the switch. I see that you, Shelley, have a 72, and yours and Teepo might be different.

I never would have guessed courtesy lights! My bulbs must be burned out. Thanks for helping me see the light. ha ha!

Thank you Highwayman for that info, as well.

The light you found is referred to as a map light. On a 69 Cutlass, this light will come on with the rest of the interior lights when the doors are opened. When the doors are closed, the switch is used to operate the light. Turning this light on the switch and with the doors closed will not cause the other interior lights to come on. If the light does not finction, it may need a new bulb. If it doesn't operate with the switch, the switch contacts may be dirty or broken. The light should be held in with 2 screws and the wiring should have a plug (several inches back) so it can be disconnected to replace it or service the assembly outside of the car.

Mine is the same as your's. Only the light on the dash comes on, not any of those under the dash.

Go to user CP and set your setting to no email notification as your defalt. You can then just subcribe to email on any certain tread you want.

The contacts on those switches are pretty flimsy - you may have to play with them to get it to work right.

Well just to be sure, I flipped on the map (courtesy) light last night, and sure enough, it's the only one that comes on. My other 72's were like that also, back in the day....

Thanks, everybody. I just joined this site recently, and am already impressed with how helpful and active the members are here. As I learn more about my car, I hope to be able to share some good info with you, too.

slide switch

The item pictured above the radio tuner is a map light switch. If it isn't doing anything, the bulb probably needs to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Thank you, Don, I 'll take your advice and replace that bulb. You never know when a map light might come in handy. I didn't even know we had one!

I edited the title of your thread for future filing. If someone in the future has the same question and does a search they will find this thread more easily, hopefully.

Good idea, thank you for being so helpful. I'll try to be more conscious of how I title my threads in the future.

If you have the courtesy light package, you got about 13-15 small lights through out the car. One under the hood, a trunk light, glove box light, footwell lights, mirror map light, courtesy light by the radio, a light over the headlight switch, an ash tray light, 2 small lights over the wiper switch area, 2(instead of 1) light over the AC/heater face plate, & I'm probably forgetting one or two?
I can provide any parts/pieces if you're missing any of these. I also have taken them apart & cleaned/repaired many of these & can provide technical support to anyone that needs it.
