Question How much for engine?

Hi I have a completely rebuilt 1970 cutlass supreme engine with a new rebuilt 4- barell Rochester carb. My father is bugging me to get rid of it, and I was wondering how much I should sell it for. The engine machine work was all done at a reputable place, and the engine only has 10,000 miles on it since the job was done. I kept this engine as original as possible, and even when replacing the rocker arms, I ordered them from the dealer.

I had the car since I was 16, but some idiot came and broke every single window on the car and mirror. At that point I could not afford to replace all that glass so I had to strip it and junk it. But really it was not in the greatest shape to begin with.
Any help would be appreciated.

How long has it been sitting? Do you still have records of what was done? 350 or 455? What Heads? need some more info.

350

Sorry guess I should of said that. It is a 350 and heads are original, beyond that I do not know. I can across about 100 receipts when I was moving, and I think I tossed them. Most were faded to nothing.

The engine has been sitting for two years in a garage. There is no trans, because the bell housing was cracked bad. E&R racing in Addison IL did the machine work- I do not even know if they are in business anymore.

Honestly I am not a mechanic or anything, and a girl, so I followed the fisher book, from Tamraz after the machine shop work I did the rest. That's how I know everything is new.
Wish I had my car back.

It is a bummer that the glass in your Olds was destroyed.

IMHO, if you don't have any receipts and it is just a complete engine without a transmission then you should ask $300 obo.

Welcome to our site. I hope you can sell the engine to someone and both should be happy. Good luck. By the way, don't use an excuse of being a woman, Sandy would take exception; she has a beautiful car and does a lot of work on it herself. You can accomplish whatever you put you mind to.

So where are you located?
By the way it sounds from what some punks did to your car, it sounds like you are in my neighborhood

Hopefully you are, I'd be interested in it. But I somehow doubt my luck is that good.

Put you location in your profile so it is always there, and potential buyers will know if you are close.
Let me know if you are in my area though.
DIBS if you are!!!

I could be interested as well, so long as my fairer half doesn't catch wind of it .

Price and location would guide my interest.

Thanks,

Addison is a western suburb of Chicago, not far from O'hare.
We had a 455 done by E + R, but I guess their 'head man' didn't clearance the bronze valve guides, as they siezed @ 4000 in 3rd gear!
Guess who fixed it for free!!!
Some might remember them for their "rubberdrive" clutch discs - oval rubber in place of springs, and they worked pretty good!

Well guess what guys, it sold for $650.00. Not bad, but still brought a tear to my eye. I did not think it would sell- and if it did not that fast. I was scrambling to find a car to put the engine in.
Your right, being a girl is no excuse.... But funny- no one would buy it from a girl. My dad had to sell it for me. Then it sold right away. Who ever they were got a good engine that was lovingly cared for.

Here is my post i posted on ROP yesterday.

Recently ive been having trouble finding a good used engine. I Was loosing hope on it. Then i found a guy locally selling a low mile stock spec rebuilt 1970 350 olds. Sat for a few years but he wanted $700 for it. Well after buying 3 motors recently that didnt turn out how the sellers described i was alittle hesitant to spend that much. But aftyer talking with him about it, and with his guaranty that if it didnt run good to bring it back and he would give me my money back, i went for it. It was kinda dirty, but under the valve cover it looked new. I took it home, cleaned it, and broke it down alittle to see what i had, and to regasket it. Well it turned out great. Its got .030 pistons (shallow dish) totally rebuilt heads with all new parts, steel timing set, new cam (no markings), all new internal parts, Reman carb, and its clean as hell on the inside. just like new. So anyway im crossing my fingers that it runs great. But from the looks of it, it might have been worth the wait.

That is a very interesting coincidence. Glad you two got together for the exchange as it sounds like everyone is happy about it, that's the way it should be.

Wow, very coincidental! I am so happy to see the pics. Keep them coming.

I am sending off that extra distributor, and the service manual today. The one on the engine works, but something was acting up with the advance idle at stops. We did not get the chance to play around with it too much because of the window incident. The service manual is specifically for the 1970 cutlass/442, it is a bit in shambles but still useful. And I do not know if you will need to, but we changed the thermostat seasonally. I also have a newer extra thick radiator for this car that is fairly new if your are interested.

Got the distributor, and book yesterday. Thanks. The book is cool.

I wish you had the reciepts from what was done on the motor. I would like to know a few more things. Do you remember if the heads where milled at all, or if the block was decked? Im trying to get an idea on what the compression is? from the look of the bottom of the head it looks like the head has been milled at least .020+ Heres a pic.

Was talking in over, and it could be possible/probable that the heads were milled, but I do not think it was decked. Will be at my other house in next couple days will look for reciptes, but it is a really long shot. Had many, but many were for the rest of the car. Like lifetime warranties on parts at parts stores long closed down, so I in all likelihood, dumped it in the move.

I measured from the head bolds, and from what i found it looks like it was milled .020. Thats cool helps alittle with compression. If you find anything more, great! If not, its cvool. Like i said im happy with the motor. I just gotta get a cam in it.

OK, I apologize for this, but In light of Firefrosts comment above, I am laughing hysterically right now.

On another note, this is one of the coolest examples of kismet, or serendipity, or small world, or .... I have seen. very cool!

It was in on friday night. got the motor and trans in. It was a long day bunch of runnng around. plus didnt help that Jeremy was like a kid in a candy store when we went to the junkyard for a driveshaft. We called it quits at 1am, then drank beer till 3am. Took yesterday off.

Just finished priming the engine, fixing broken bolt in exhaust manifold, distributor in, all brackets and pulleys on. Just have to do the exhaust, starter, drill a couple holes for the crossmember, trim the slipyoke and install driveshaft, carb, linkage, wires, plug wires, coolant. Stuff like that. Have it running this afternoon. Ill take a few pics.

While you had it apart, did you happen to look at the valve seals?
Stockers and the 'original' springs might restrict the lift on a new cam - make sure it's checked!

Glad you got a great engine at a good price, locally, as that's just luck!
Maybe go back to wheninrome and show her how you 'got it in'!!
See if she cries!

The spring, seals, and valves were all new. The motor was rebuilt a while back and doesnt have that many miles on it. I ended up not swapping the cam.

Yeah i bet she would! LOL

Looks great! Ya, this engine had only 10,000 miles on it. Really just broken in. I still have the original speed-o-meter, and wrote on the outside shell when the engine went in.
(rickman) I am not going to cry over it. Just thrilled it went to someone who knows how to take care of her. Really was a winning situation for both of us. Now I am going to go ahead and buy the Nikon D7000 camera I have been waiting to come out. You know the biggest problem with hobbies is that you just can't afford to do everything lol....
