driveshaft

I have a 1971 cutlass olds with a 455 and a 400 turbo. what is the length of the driveshaft? they say its the not the right one and its to long so it cracked my trans. help me out i dont want this to happen again..

measure from the tip of the splines to the tip of the rear yoke. That should be the measurements the local driveline shop should have to cut yours down to size. i had to take about 5 inches out mine when i went to a th400 from a th350. You should have about a half inch to 3/4 inch of slack so when you slide it back in to the yoke it has enough space to move in and out freely. when the car squats while launching or turning etc. it moves in a bit . it needs that space so it wont bind up and take things out . This is what my local driveshaft shop told me a few years back

Alright thanks. you can see were the the front shaft slides into the trans and it has a inch were spot. is that enough?

yeah if there is space between the front yoke and the tailshaft and you say you have an inch it should be good. also make sure you check this whith the suspension loaded or the car on the ground .
