Crate 396 & Tranny Cost

Could somebody please provide me with a figure of how much a crate 396 engine and brand new transmission would cost? How any about a figure for installation for both in CA. Also what is the biggest difference between a 350 and 396? Owner of 72 CS
Thanks in advance.

Ummm, a 396?

Are you referring to a big block Chevy 396? Olds never made a 396. They made a 394 back in the early 60's, but that's a lot different from your 350 Olds and not a bolt-in swap.

Why are you asking about the price of a 396 on an Olds site?

You might get a better reception for this question on a Chebby site.

I would say that the price of a 396 is the soul of your car.
Pretty steep in my opinion.

Eric, no religious discussions allowed. Let us not judge, it may be a typo.

Yeah, but how could I let that just drop silently?

We'll find out soon enough.

If he really means what he said, we know that there's someone on this thread who can answer those sorts of questions for him anyway.

Thank you copper120 for the HELPFUL response. considering this is the newbie forum it should be understandable why I would not know that a 396 is specifically for a "chebby". The bolt pattern is something I overlooked and now understand the importance. Let me rephrase, can anyone help with the ballpark price for a crate 350 rocket and crate transmission? Thanks in advance for all helpful posts.

A rebuilt TH350 with the BOP bolt pattern will be somewhere in the $1000-$1200 range, usually just a little higher than the Chevy version. Turn key "crate" Olds engines are not common like the common Chevy 350's you see everywhere. You may be better off rebuilding your current engine.

What's the story on you existing drive train and what are you trying to accomplish with the car?

All depends on how little rubber you want left on the tires at the end of the summer

I have this motor at my shop now. My buddy built it for his hotrod project. But life took over so its just sitting here. And his hotrod is years away from being done. Most work was done at Rocket Racing. Its a steal at $4300 because thats what he has in it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/171018770796...84.m1438.l2649

I have video of it running on my run stand.

I also have this motor for sale. Its a stock used 69 350 $1000

@ Hookem Horns I want a weekend rider, I am not looking to run through tires or attain high performance components. I'd ideally like a nice looking CS w/ a strong respectable engine. @Professur, Great links, Thank you! Thanks @F-8 but $4K is way past my range, plus I don't want anyone crappin their pants when I fly by.
