84 cutlass won't start

84 cutlass won't start

Hey everyone, I had new plugs wires distributor cap and rotor put on the cutlass and let's say a not so professional mechanic mixed up the wires, I'd like to know if someone can tell me if the motor I have is original to the car so we can get the firing order correct, I'll send pics

Check your VIN..... the 8th digit is the engine application for what is original to the vehicle......
A = 3.8 V6
V =4.3 V6 Diesel
Y = 5.0 V8
N = 5.7 V8 Diesel
9 = 5.0 (w/W40 Option)


A photo of what is currently in the vehicle would help to identify it.... If you are sure it is an Olds engine check the number and/or letter on the head as well as the casting number near the oil fill tube just below the front of the intake....

Wouldn't the firing order for all Olds 350's and 307's be the same? Isn't the firing order on the intake manifold? Now if it is a V-6, that is another story. V-8 or V-6 would be a good starting point.

Yes, but, that info is often hard to see.
We should start with is it a Brand C or O or a V6 or what?
Plus remember the installer has to know what direction the distributor rotates, how to tell if TDC is ready to fire #1 or some other cylinder, all that rot.

ALL Olds V8s ever made (except the Aurora) use 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Got the 84 Cutlass started

sorry for the super late next year reply, we got it started, it is a V6.
oh and a tip for all the DIYers, NEVER EVER buy a BWD distributor cap for your car. the connectors break off with the slightest pressure on the plug boot.
